The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) on Wilshire Boulevard is one of the most popular art museums in Los Angeles and the largest museum in the western U.S.. Established in 1965 in Los Angeles's Miracle Mile district, next to the La Brea Tar Pits, LACMA boasts over 150,000 works of art, some of it modern art and contemporary art and other pieces date back thousands of years. Movie and music lovers will appreciate LACMA's regular film and concert presentations.
With so much happening at this well-respected art museum, it can be difficult to keep track of it all. Fortunately, the LACMA app helps visitors stay abreast of all the can't-miss exhibits and events.
Great for advance planning: With so much to see at LACMA, it's too easy to run out of time before seeing even a fraction of the art museum's newest exhibition, much less the permanent collection. But the LACMA app helps you plan your visit to the Wilshire Boulevard museum adjacent to the La Brea Tar Pits by showing you all the current exhibits under the On View tab. This way, you can figure out what you can't live without seeing before you get there, to make the most of the time you have available.
Browse or search art: You can browse current exhibitions to see what's interesting, or -- if you know exactly what you're looking for -- tap Search the Collection and do a keyword search to find out if it's currently on display and in which exhibit.
A great learning tool: Tap on any exhibit or work of art, and you'll find a large vivid photo and a detailed description to teach you more about the collection, specific work of art, and the artist. You'll also learn whether you can currently see it, and for how long.
Great virtual tour: If you can't get away to LA, it's also fun to just browse over 85,000 objets d'art spanning more than two millennia of art history on the LACMA app.
Events: Tap on the Events tab up top to browse a list of events and programs that are happening over the next 24 hours. Or tap the calendar button to browse by date, or perform a keyword search in the search bar up top. Or tap the Filter button to narrow down your results by Films, Music, Members, Families, Tours, Talks, Courses, and Special.
Map: The Map button gives you LACMA's lay of the campus -- from the Broad Contemporary Art Museum to Bruce Goff's innovative Pavilion for Japanese Art to the Lynda and Stewart Resnick Exhibition Pavilion -- with a handy, easy-to-read map. Click on any building to explore its galleries and search on-view art. Tap on Amenities to surface parking, dining, shopping, and box office locations on the map.
Location-based updates: If you're still feeling lost during your museum visit, the app uses your location to provide information on everything within your current vicinity as you wander the museum.
Guided tours: Get audio and video commentary on LACMA's collections and exhibits from the artists and curators behind them in the app.
Hours and more: Under Plan Your Visit, you'll find detailed Hours, Admission, Directions, Parking, Food & Drink, and Shop information.
A gateway to membership: You can get discounted and even free tickets to special exhibits and events, and, of course, support the arts, in general with a LACMA membership, so why not join? The LACMA app can help you join one of its 10 membership levels by directing you toward your membership purchase on the LACMA website.
Only useful before or during a trip to LACMA: The LACMA app is great for planning your visit to the Southern California museum and even during your visit. But after your visit, it quickly loses its usefulness and may end up deleted. Sure, it's great for looking up beautiful works of art, but you can also just google them.
Museums can be overwhelming with so much to see, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art's collection of modern and contemporary art, Asian art, Islamic art, and Latin American art, is no different. But the official LACMA for iPhone app helps users make the most of their museum trip with exhibit and event info, maps, and even location-based updates and guided tours.
