Editors' Review

by   / February 27, 2009

This free application thwarts anyone trying to read your index.dat files to ascertain your Web surfing habits, but falls short of completely removing all tracks.

Index.dat Analyzer offers a simple file menu and toolbar interface with two major panes for listing and viewing your index.dat files. Almost immediately after firing up this application, it displays the index.dat files found in the Internet Explorer cache. A drop-down box helps you easily view contents by category. A filtering feature narrows the file list to help you easily find a particular trace. You can selectively remove items merely by checking tick boxes, or you can quickly select all, to wipe them immediately.

The files are cleaned, but not to any governmental specifications. This utility also does not clean any other Web surfing traces from your computer. While many users may not understand index.dat files, this application is easy to use and helps anyone interested in protecting a computer from prying eyes.
