Editors' Review

Hurricane - American Red Cross is a must-have app if you live or travel in hurricane zones. It helps you with everything you need to prepare for, survive, and recover from a hurricane or tropical storm. Hurricane receives real-time alerts for your location and also finds evacuation routes, hospitals, and emergency services when necessary. It's an excellent teaching tool, too.

Pros

Disaster relief: With authoritative advice and facts from the American Red Cross, just having Hurricane on your phone can mean the difference between life and death when a hurricane hits.

Real-time alerts: We could receive real-time alerts for hurricanes, floods, tornados, and other events via text, email, and other means.

Two language options: We could toggle between English and Spanish language interfaces, making this app even more versatile in an emergency.

Toolkit: The Toolkit menu accesses Flashlight, Strobe Light, and Alarm widgets; a plan-making tool, and first aid advice. You can even send "I'm safe" notifications to worried friends and family members.

Cons

Text heavy: As we've noted with the other apps from the American Red Cross, about the only legit complaint we can make is that it looks and feels like a pamphlet from the American Red Cross. It's much more than that, though, but it would benefit from some multimedia additions.

Bottom Line

Hurricane -- American Red Cross is authoritative, concise, useful, and packed with extras. If you're in an area prone to hurricanes, this is a must-have app to add to your device.

How can you tell if an Android app is safe?
