The interface is really, really bad. Very unMac like, I'm sorry I bought this machine. I work with a PC every day, I don't feel like using that kind of interface when I get home. Next time I buy a scanner I'll download the software first...

This software does not work with 10.3 even though on the box of the scanner (3970) says compatible with 10.2 and above. Last time I checked version 10.3 is above 10.2. This is getting ridiculous. All these huge tech companies and their false advertising....Apple included. They just are not trustworthy...now I have a shelled out 150euro for a scanner I cannot use unless I go back to an older operating system. I asked HP about the problem and they tell me that 4600 and 8500 series of scanner works with 10.3. Eat me HP I have a 3970 that says it is compatible with 10.2 and above.

Although I have the 5500c (which is the 3500c with an Auto Photo Feeder) I have also been unimpressed with the software interface. It seems like the whole package is thrown together with countless applications parked everywhere. The Auto Photo Feeder doesn't work most of the time, but that is another issue. Just to add to this thread, Photoshop Elements 2 freezes everytime I try to scan from within the Application using the "HP PrecisionScan DS" TWAIN option. So, I, too will scan to the desktop, and then launch Photoshop. A great step backwards. Also, the software cannot determine the outline of a photo, requiring the user to manually select the scanned area each time. Another step backwards from solutions available years ago. At least, with OS X, the whole system doesn't come crashing down, just Photoshop. Using this scanner in OS 9, the Auto Photo Feeder would grind the system to a stop, so I quit using it at all. Needless to say, if I knew then what I know now, I would NOT purchase this product. I think Canon probably has the best soluction for a Mac, or I should say the lesser of the imperfect solutions.

I downloaded the driver/software. In OS 9, it's not very user friendly but it works alright. But under OS X, it freezes Photoshop everytime I use the scanner. For now, I use the scanner software to scan the whole page to the desktop first. Then I will open that saved file with photoshop to crop and edit. It's a hassle. I wrote HP today and I am waiting for a reply. Hopefully they have a fix/workaround.

Well, it has only taken HP 10 friggin months to come up with this with another gigantic download of nearly 200MB.
They should be ashamed of themselves.
These scanners were sold as being OSX compatible for a year now and were cleary not. The very least HP could do is mail every registered user a new CD.
Too late for me, I sold my 3570c scanner a month or so ago, after waiting for over half a year for an update.
I will never, never by HP again, their support has been absolutely atrocious, their software buggy and intolerably late, they sell their products under false pretenses (marked as compatible when they are not, I also have a cp1700PS A3 PostScript inkjet from HP, only the PostScript emulator does not work under OSX (sold as running in Classic, which it does not as acknowledged by HP)).
Thou takest your chances with HP, thou hast been warned, do not believe it, and remember:
"Who are in control, they are not in control of anything - they don't even control themselves!"
"I have detailed information about the situation...which completely proves that what they allege are illusions . . . They lie every day."
"Their failure in this regard is abysmal. They want to tell the world changes thought - as a matter of fact, they do not respect the world, they want to tell taxpayers and the domestic public to keep them deceived. We will embroil them, confuse them and keep them in the quagmire. They have begun to tell more lies so that they might continue with the perpetration of their crimes. May they be accursed."
