GPS Topo USA for iOS

GPS Topo USA turns your iPhone or iPad into a fully functional handheld and automotive GPS with no in-app purchases required. Included are complete USGS Topographic map coverage of the United States including Alaska and Hawaii. The app is designed for both offline and online operation with USGS Topo maps cached locally on your device.For road navigation when offline, roadmaps from the OpenStreetMap project can also be cached locally so you'll always have the maps you need no matter where you travel even when you have no service.Waypoints allow you to create, store, annotate and display your own custom destinations on the map, get turn-by-turn driving directions, and use the app's built in field compass for navigating in the wilderness. Use waypoints to store your favorite trails, canoe launches, campsites, geocaches, hunting & fishing spots and more.Each waypoint features a "GO" button that passes its GPS coordinates to your device's Maps app for turn-by-turn driving directions and a "Target" button that enables the Compass's direction of travel indicator to guide you in the field. You just can't get lost with GPS Topo USA.The compass features a familiar design modeled like a standard field magnetic compass. It includes digital readouts of your current GPS coordinates, altitude above sea level, speed of travel and your current compass heading. When you set a "Target" waypoint, the compass adds a standard direction of travel arrow pointing you in the right direction and provides a digital display of the bearing and distance to your waypoint. Just follow the direction arrow and let your compass count down the distance to your destination.We've even included two useful waypoints to help demonstrate the benefits. First, use the "Home" waypoint to store your home's GPS coordinates. Then no matter where you go, use the "GO" button to get driving directions to your home. Second, use the "My Car" waypoint to get you back to where you parked. Whether you are at a trailhead or in a crowded parking lot at the mall, just tap the "Use Current" button to store your vehicle's location. When you need to find your car, open the waypoint and touch the "Target" button. The field compass will then guide you right back to your vehicle.In addition to the features listed above, GPS Topo USA allows you to view Apple's roadmaps, satellite images, and hybrid maps while online. NOTE: GPS location accuracy is limited by the capabilities of the GPS receiver built into your Apple device. GPS Topo USA will function on devices without a GPS receiver however a GPS receiver is required for accurate point-to-point navigation and for use as a handheld GPS in the field. GPS add-on units are available from third party manufacturers to enable GPS on devices that do not include a receiver. For offline use where no Internet connection is available, USGS and OpenStreetMaps must be downloaded while still on-line. Any maps downloaded online will be available for offline use.
