From Aarne Ranta:
GF Offline Translator provides text and speech translation for 14 languages, covering all 182 language pairs. It works completely offline, that is, without an internet connection, in the text mode; the speech mode may require internet. The languages are Bulgarian, Catalan, Chinese, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, Swedish, and Thai. More languages will be added in later versions.Translations in the app have a varying quality, which is marked by colours. Hence green translations are the most reliable, yellow ones rather uncertain, and red ones probably not quite correct. But even the red translations can be more useful than nothing. The app also shows alternative translations and grammatical information, accessed by tapping the arrow head right of the translations. For instance, if you type a single word, you can get a complete inflection table of the word in most of the languages. The app is based on grammars written in GF, Grammatical Framework. GF is an open-source project, and the app is based on the work of over 50 contributors from all over the world. It also uses free dictionaries such as Wiktionary and WordNet.The grammar-based technology distinguishes GF Offline Translator from most other translation tools, which are based on statistics rather than grammars. This is what allows the app to be compact enough for offline use (30 MB for all the languages), and is also the basis of confidence information.Another advantage of the technology is that it is easily adaptable to new areas of application. Thus the green translations of the app are currently from a small tourist phrasebook grammar. But the green part can be changed, for instance to a comprehensive professional vocabulary.
