Editors' Review

GeekSoft's File Expert HD tweaks its already worthy file manager with display, video, and interface enhancements designed for the latest Android phones and tablets. It does stuff other file managers do, like organizing and searching files, apps, and settings in one easy-to-access app. But with File Expert HD, your phone or tablet becomes your primary Internet device. It integrates with your own cloud service as well as its own GCloud. It can send files using Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and NFC. It can access FTP, SFTP, and FTPS servers, too, and even accept files as a mobile Web or FTP server. File Expert HD 2.0.5 is free and runs in Android 2.2 and up, but will most benefit devices running v4.0 or better.

At first glance, File Expert HD's user interface might resemble other contenders in the crowded field of Android file managers. But its familiar plainness is a virtue. To begin with, it's tabbed like a Web browser: Just tap to Add New Tab to add My Files, Folders, or My Tools tabs or Surf the Net. Yes, it's a Web browser, too, with active tabs in its toolbar and your main tabs in a sidebar. Switching between tabs and browser is fast and intuitive, and the layouts strike an excellent balance between a full Windows view and the blockish simplicity of pure Android apps. First-time users encounter handy tutorials on drag-and-drop and other gestures, and if that's not enough, File Expert HD has an excellent Help file. It synced smoothly with our Dropbox account. You'll need to turn on the Web PC Suite to enable the server feature.

We've tried and ditched lots of apps that promise to make your Android experience a bit less robotic. But we're going to hang on to File Expert HD.
