This is the first major New York museum show to focus on the late work of the Swiss artist Ferdinand Hodler (1853-1918), an often overlooked but central figure in turn-of-the-century art circles, whose works were exhibited at the Vienna Secession. Born in Bern, Hodler took up painting in 1870. He had an abiding love of the natural world and greatly admired the work of Albrecht Drer, the Northern Renaissance Master.Ferdinand Hodler: View to Infinity features over seventy-five works by Hodler, including his Symbolist paintings, his powerful portraits, and the landscapes for which he is most famous. Hodler was included in Vienna Secession exhibitions on numerous occasions and had a major impact on Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele. His work will be juxtaposed alongside theirs to allow a side-by-side comparison. In addition, a series of intimate photographs of Hodler taken by Gertrud Dbi-Mller yield special insight into the artists working methods and his private life as well. This application includes audio that features interviews with the exhibitions curator, Jill Lloyd, and commentary from the director of the Neue Galerie New York, Rene Price.Ferdinand Hodler: View to Infinityis on view at these venues as follows:Neue Galerie New York1048 Fifth Avenue at 86th Street, New York, NY 10028September 20, 2012 January7, 2013Fondation Beyeler, BaselJanuary 27 May 26, 2013Category views, numeric keypad entry and the keyword search function enable you to access the tour anyway you wish.
