• An abandonned program - used to be great in its day

  Pros

  This program helped me open many different types of files and look at the text content even if it couldn't translate them. In most cases, it could. That was in 2009 and before.

  Cons

  Today this program isn't listed on DataViz's website. They have not issued an update in over 2 years, and obviously it's not going anywhere. Meanwhile new formats for new programs and operating systems abound, so I don't recommend it for that reason.

  Summary

  Can still be helpful for certain translations, especially of older Windows format files to usable Mac format files. In fact I used to use it to translate from one windows format to another for friends who were strictly on windows platforms... done on my Mac. But these days most current software can open the "other" platform's file structures, and there is not so much need for this, which may be why DataViz shut it down.

  You can translate a fair number of files into different formats.

  Cons

  There are some formats you can't translate, and DataVis hasn't been issuing updates when new formats come put; you need to wait until they issue a new "version" and buy it again.

  Summary

  I won't keep buying it just for another few file translations.

  This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />I just upgraded from Version 15. I just downloaded version 16 of MacLink Plus from the DataViz web site. I have a Mac PowerBook G4 (1.67 GHz, 2 GB RAM, running Mac OS X 10.4.9). When the program starts after the installation process is over, the window says "Pre-Release." When you quit the program after it is initially started at the end of the installation process, it will not re-start. Trying to get a response out of DataViz is like pounding your head against a wall. None of the phone numbers work and all e-mails are replied to stating your e-mail was marked as spam and disregarded.

  This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />Before you plunk down your hard-earned money on this product, before you even TALK about price, be absolutely sure that it will do what they want you to believe it will. For instance, they claim to translate MS Works for Windows 2.0, 3.0, 4.5, 95 documents. Goody. What they don't tell you is that they do NOT support newer Works versions. 5? 6? 7? Nope. I am giving this program one star out of five, because it opens about one document out of five which I attempt to translate using it.

However, as someone who was dragged kicking and screaming from Wordperfect to Word and who has reams of legacy wordperfect docs that needed translation, this application did exactly what I wanted in no time flat. No learning curve. No problems.

  This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />Remember that Dataviz is the company that built a major business in the 1990's, advertising "Leaving the Mac?" and providing an array of tools to make it easy for inidividuals and companies to ditch their Macs and move to Windows PCs. Before you decide to purchase any product from this company, consider their past, present and future actions towards the Mac platform. I know I will.

  This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />Version 14 adds what? PC Office to Mac Office v.X? Huh? Office 98 opens any old Office that I can think of. Just add the .doc, .xls or .ppt suffix. Office v.X opens any Office too. That is not a valid reason to upgrade to version 14, if you have an older version of MacLink. I still have MacLink 11 that opens some odd-ball files in OS 9.2.2/Classic. =-= Version 14 may be useful if you run across an odd-ball file and you don't have anything else to open it. And Version 14 is OS-10.2. If you don't have ANY MacLink, get it. - JJ
