This download actually contains two program demos: 2D Cats Mah Jong and 3D Cats Mah Jong. Whether you buy either program rests almost solely on how charming you find the cat cartoons that decorate the tiles. We think the kitties are pretty darn cute, and the single, included song is pleasant. However, the 3D version runs extremely slowly, and the benefits of adding depth aren't apparent in the gameplay. Other than that, the programs play identically. You can add layouts to your list of favorites, toggle the music and sound effects with menu buttons, and save your game. However, you cannot customize layouts or add tile sets in the demo. You can only open the programs for a combined number of five uses, too, so you need to make up your mind quickly. Our main objection, besides the stingy demo, is that the games don't really play like traditional mahjong solitaire. The tile set contains four pairs of each image, rather than the normal two pairs, and the traditional layout isn't included. Cat lovers, however, might forgive Cats Mah Jong its faults.

Developer's Description

Cats Mah Jong comes with 10 charming tiles (including cats, Christmas, Halloween, and teddy bears) as well as classical cat tiles for mahjong solitaire or regular mahjong against three computer opponents. You can rotate the tiles in solitaire, and more than 150 layouts include such images as elephants, trains, butterflies, and whales. You can edit layouts, create new layouts, customize the rules, enlarge or reduce the size of the board, and disable the scoring option. Layouts include a difficulty rating, and you can select traditional solitaire or border play. Also, each tile set comes with delightful matching sound files.

In the solitaire game, as your skills improve you can increase the difficulty setting, and in the regular mahjong game, you can set the opening number of points, make losers pay winners, make losers pay losers, and use seasonal tiles. You also can customize the view with textures, shadows, depth, and color, and change the background or select none.
