Bookends helps writers, researchers, academics, or students collect, organize, and access references in an organized and easy-to-use way. While the free version allows you to store only up to 50 references in a library, the paid version removes that cap, but comes at the hefty price tag of $59.99.

Pros

Sheer power: Bookends impresses with its ability to store, search through, and organize references. For academics or students constantly researching and writing papers that require extensive citations, this app has the potential to be an effective time-saving tool.

Online search: Easily accessible with a few clicks through the menu bar, the online search works flawlessly. A variety of sources, including Amazon, the Library of Congress, Google Scholar, and a host of universities can be selected through a drop-down menu. From there, you can search for any title and immediately pull up the reference information and add it to one of your custom libraries.

Cons

Unintuitive interface: At first glance, the interface looks plain, with no indication of how the app is to be used. You have to go through a few tutorials to understand most of its functions. On the upside, there are several good video tutorials available on the company's website.

Pro feel: The app feels like many other professional apps, with lots of menu items and little explanation. This is fine for the professional user, but as the app is partly marketed toward students who are likely first-time users of this type of software, a more accessible design would have been more inspired.

Bottom Line

Although expensive, Bookends turns out to be a powerful program, an effective option for the academic or writer who is in need of a resource management software. If you're a student, you may find it inaccessible and expensive. Even so, you can still try the free version. However, if the 50 references cap annoys you, you should look for more easy-to-use and cost-effective alternatives.

Developer's Description

Bookends is a full featured and cost-effective bibliography/reference and information management system for students and professionals. With Bookends you can easily import references (information about journal articles, books) from EndNote, and directly search and import from PubMed, the Web of Science, Google Scholar, JSTOR, Amazon, the Library of Congress, and hundreds of other online sources. Use a built-in browser to download references with pdfs or and/or web pages with a click. Automatic searches of PubMed let you discover articles as soon as they are published. Powerful group-based searches, with static, smart, and virtual groups. Live Search lets you further refine searches as you type. Annotate your database with reference cross-linking with defined relationships and comments. Attach any file (such as a pdf) to a reference and view or open it instantly. There are options to automatically download, rename and organize pdf files on-the-fly from the Internet (requires access permission) or from your hard drive. Scan your word processor files and automatically generate finished manuscripts with properly formatted bibliographies. Access the power of Bookends directly from MS Word (including Word 2008), Mellel, and Nisus Writer Pro. Scan Pages '08 and '09 files and OpenOffice 3 files, or RTF files saved from any word processor. Share your references over the Internet with anyone, on any platform (you, but not people who access your databases, must have a broadband connection).
