Editors' Review

Avira Antivirus Security for Android scans apps and files for malicious software, provides antitheft tools, and helps track which apps might be compromising your privacy.

App and file scanning: By default, Avira Antivirus Security scans apps and files on your device for malware. Fine-tune which locations and apps to scan in the settings, and schedule when scans occur. While you can use the free antivirus tool without an Avira account, registering for one unlocks other security tools.

High marks on malware detection: Avira performs well on the suite of tests run by AV-Test, a security and antivirus research firm, earning high marks on malware detection and battery use. The free version of the app checks for updated virus definitions daily. The paid version checks hourly.

Quick access to scan information: Tap the Antivirus tab and then Scan to check your device's apps and files. After the scan is complete, the app displays the results and whether it found any issues.

Antitheft tools: Avira's antitheft tool helps you locate a misplaced phone or tablet, remotely lock it, and wipe it if it's gone for good. Avira is insistent that you activate its antitheft tools, reminding you after every scan. To use the antitheft feature, you need to sign in to your account.

Broad range of free security tools: If you create an account with Avira, you can unlock free security services through the app. In addition to the antitheft tools, you can unlock a widget that helps you search for safe websites, activate an email monitor that watches for email hacks, turn on a call blocker, and evaluate the privacy settings of your apps. The paid edition adds secure browsing to ward off harmful sites.

At times not the most obvious navigation: Avira Antivirus Security can put you on screens with no clear way to navigate to another screen. And tapping elements that look identical sometimes leads to new information or a new screen -- and sometimes doesn't.

Bottom Line

Avira Antivirus Security offers solid, up-to-date malware protection. The app in general offers clear navigation but at times could do a better job of displaying navigation tools.
