Editors' Review

Avast's Mobile Security app for Android earns top marks for protecting your phone from malware. Download the free version to get a handy collection of security and phone-management utilities; with a subscription, you gain useful tools for keeping files private and managing a lost phone.

Simple, clean interface: Avast Mobile Security's main screen does a nice job of presenting information, with simple graphics and short descriptions for each tool. Tap the orange Scan icon to check your device for malware, for example, or tap the Wi-Fi signal icon to check the security of your wireless connection. After a scan, you easily address any concerns, and you are done. Via settings, you can gain greater control over Avast's actions and set what Avast specicially looks for and where on your phone it can look.

Companion security and privacy tools: Besides malware protection, Avast offers a range of related tools. You can set up a photo vault, check your Wi-Fi connection's security and speed, run a VPN, clean up unwanted files, and block phone numbers.

Anti-Theft tools let you remotely control your misplaced phone. You can capture a photo when someone attempts to unlock your phone, lock your phone if the SIM card is changed, and record sounds of wherever your phone is located.

Top scores on malware detection: AV-Test, a security and antivirus testing and research firm, consistently awards Avast high marks on malware detection and overall app performance.

Annual subscription is a deal: A subscription runs $5.99 a year, which may be the cheapest we've seen for a single-device subscription for Android.

Intrusive ads: After a scan, with the free version, an ad takes over two-thirds of your screen.

The hard sell: In addition to ads, the app is a bit pushy about getting you to adopt Avast's other services, including setting a data cap and running a firewall.

Bottom Line

The Avast Mobile Security app for Android earns top marks for guarding your phone from malicious activity. Avast can be a bit pushy about getting you to adopt everything its app has to offer to secure the contents of your phone, but otherwise is a snap to use.
