AlarmChk uses a 'silent' alarm function, which won't light up the LCD if the device is in sleep mode, so you can safely run it without worrying about draining the batteries too much. Unfortunately that means that you need PalmOS 3.2 or higher to run AlarmChk, as this particular function is not available in previous versions of PalmOS.
