Forget Rodeo Drive, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Grauman's Chinese Theatre, Los Angeles Zoo, Santa Monica Pier, Venice Beach boardwalk, Griffith Park, Griffith Observatory, La Brea Tar Pits, Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm, and Universal Studios. There's a lot more to do in Los Angeles County and the surrounding areas outside of these typical tourist traps. And while you're at it, make those hop-on-hop-off tours a thing of the past.
Dance-pop band YACHT's cofounders Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans, out of LA, developed the 5 Every Day mobile app to steer Southern California visitors and even LA natives to a daily selection of five far cooler under-the-radar attractions.
Easy to use: 5 Every Day couldn't be any easier to navigate. Just launch the app and you'll see five things to check out. Tap on any of the attractions for more info, including a full description with directions, times to go, prices, and a link to the event or destination's web page or social media page. Or if you're short on time -- and timing, money, or distance from your current location are your only concerns -- just tap on the corresponding icons on the bottom rail to pull up just that info without ever having to leave the page.
Nice variety: Knowing that everyone has different interests, 5 Every Day brings you a great mix of attractions in Los Angeles, with something for everyone. In testing, we found a museum event, a park hike, a downtown Los Angeles restaurant that's way cooler than In-N-Out Burger to check out, a concert at a far more intimate concert hall than Staples Center, and an Olvera Street shop to explore.
Insider curation: 5 Every Day is curated by a team of tastemakers: local artists, musicians, and designers, who live in the City of Angels, so you can be confident that your handful of Los Angeles attractions for the day are hip and happening. These definitely aren't the tourist attractions you see in guidebooks.
Economical: We were surprised by how many of the things to do in the app are actually free.
Step-by-step directions: There's no need to stress about how to get to that contemporary art event on Wilshire Boulevard, for example, because if you allow location sharing, the app opens Google Maps (or Apple Maps in iOS) to provide you with step-by-step directions.
Helpful reminders: If you decide to check out one of the listed events, you can easily set a reminder alert for 30 or 60 minutes before the event, after you give the app permission to access your calendar.
Save or favorite events: If you want to save or favorite an item to explore or re-explore later, you can just tap the plus sign below the event. To see your favorites, just pull down from the home screen. Remember, though, that you can only save or favorite three times. If you'd like to unfavorite an event or favorite more than three events, you'll have to pay $1.99 in the app for unlimited favorites.
Mailing list: Don't have time to check the app? Have updates about special events and future happenings come directly to your inbox by signing up for the 5 Every Day mailing list.
Only three free fave saves: With all the exciting options that 5 Every Day provides, you'll want to save or favorite a bunch of them. But you can only save three for free, which means you'll probably end up spending $1.99 to save more. We'd love it if we could do this for free.
5 Every Day brings you a highly curated listing of the under-the-radar events and destinations in Los Angeles that you won't want to miss. So venture outside the theme park and the studio tour, and see the cooler side of Los Angeles.
