3D-XplorMath for Mac allows you to visualize over 250 different mathematical objects, giving you a new way to understand advanced concepts.

3D-XplorMath for Mac gives you a wonderful working environment in which you can render and display mathematical objects quickly for your study. You get started by selecting the mathematical surface you would like to explore from. Your selection is quickly drawn by the application and displayed in the main window. You can drag the object with your mouse to display the object's details from every angle, which gives you unique views and the ability to manipulate the object in a real-time, 3D environment. Additional information about the object, such as its mathematical formula and equation examples, is just a click away in the Menu Bar. We found many interesting options when drawing and displaying our object. We were able to set focal length, change lighting settings, and even choose one of the many animation options to study our chosen object in even more detail. Rotating 3D objects to any orientation is easy, too; all you need to do is drag an object with the mouse, and after you release the mouse button, it will continue to spin about the same axis. We especially liked the ability to export surface animations.

If you are looking for an engaging way to visualize and manipulate mathematical objects, then you should really consider 3D-XplorMath for Mac. Its top-notch performance and many display features make it a great solution for both math students and teachers, as well as for anyone with a curiosity about math.

What's new in version 10.8

We have improved the documentation. We would very much like to know the extent to which our program is being used on "old" systems and hardware. The new Free Pascal compilation runs on OS 10.4.11 and later.

Since our point clouds have been used for Monte Carlo typpe numerical computations, we have switched to the Mersenne Twister, a state of the art random number generator.

The control of the playback speed for movies was too hidden, we added a slider control (visible only while a movie is playing).

The Plane Curve Category: A demo showing rotating gear wheels has been added. The teeth of the gear wheels have circle involute flanks.

The Surface Category: We have added more "decorations", in particular to the Implicit Surfaces.

The Fractals & Chaos Category: The Henon Attractor can now be rendered in Hit-Count-Mode. This gives some impression of the invariant density on this complicated set.

Developer's Description

3D-XplorMath is a mathematical visualization tool that has been under development for over fifteen years by an international team of mathematicians, The 3DXM Consortium. There is also a Gallery of 3D-XplorMath produced visualizations and animations called The Virtual Math Museum at our homepage. Until recently, 3D-XplorMath was a Macintosh only application. However, Professor David Eck of Hobart and William Smith Colleges has created a cross-platform Java version called 3D-XplorMath-J. Think of 3D-XplorMath as a highly interactive mathematical museum for exploring the visual aspects of the beautiful universe of mathematical objects and processes. Originally designed for the developers own use in teaching and research, they have been working to make it easy and enjoyable to use by anyone with mathematical curiosity and an appreciation for the visual and logical beauty of math. This museum contains over 250 well-known (and some not so well-known) mathematical objects, arranged logically into numerous Galleries or Categories. These include: Surfaces, Planar Curves, Space Curves, Polyhedra, Conformal Maps, Dynamical Systems, Waves, Sound, and Fractals & Chaos. The "3D" in its name refers to the fact that 3D objects can be viewed in strikingly realistic stereo.
