Editors' Review

by   / February 27, 2009

This ultrabasic pop-up stopper offers decent protection from ads, but its lack of features may lead some users to the competition. 1st Popup Killer & IE Assistant appears as a small icon in your Web browser's toolbar. Clicking its button brings up the very minimal options for blocking pop-ups, quashing Flash ads, and refreshing the Web page after a specified number of seconds. You can choose to allow pop-ups from a certain site with a quick press of the Ctrl key, but you won't find a whitelist or any other customization options. In our tests, the program was quite capable against the majority of standard pop-ups and Flash ads, but it wasn't able to eliminate banners. The program emits a barely audible beep when it stops an ad, but its icon doesn't flash or change. 1st Popup Killer & IE Assistant does its main job, but more capable offerings are readily available.
