"Great!"

February 03, 2008 | By robeden

Version: xScope 2.0

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Totally agree with the previous review. xScope is an indispensable tool for my job of UI design. The new "Dimension" tool is something I've wished I had in the past many times.

I highly recommend the product and this update.

"Several bugs and missing feature"

May 12, 2007 | By oscarruitt_dotmac

Version: xScope 1.5

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
This program looks real pretty and everything but a very few minutes of use reveals some bugs. I use two monitors in a vertical configuration (which also seems to trip up the nice programmers at Apple) on a Powerbook. Guides either do not appear or appear without the controls so that they can't be moved etc. When horizontal and vertical rulers are displayed, they are perpetually joined with no way to separate them.

I first purchased the ARTIS Screen Tools package which had a different set of bugs. I then popped for the upgrade for an additional fee hoping that the problems would go away, but instead I got a different set of bugs.

If these bugs are addressed it would be a 5-star program, but the obviousness of them makes me wonder how much care went into making the program work correctly versus making it pretty. And the bad experience from upgrading from the older program accompanied by dead e-mail addresses when I tried to complain directly about the older program, along with a confusing dual set of web pages for the older program which is still sold and for xCode, leave me eager to go have a beer. The purchasing experience was not all that easy either.

"Fantastic Utility for Precise Graphic Design"

October 27, 2006 | By Justin Norman

Version: xScope 1.5

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
After trying the xScope demo for only a brief while, I found it to be useful enough to purchase. Too often I've found myself trying to center a graphic in the middle of a document by eyeballing it, since I don't have a grid or ruler available in every application I use. xScope works incredibly well as a universal ruler, magnifier and more (although I don't use much other than the ruler and magnifier).

Even just for the ruler tool, xScope has proved to be worth its meager price for me.

"SUPERB! The vesion I was waiting for!"

Version: xScope 1.5

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I have been using xScope on and off (in demo mode) for a while but finally decided to purchase with vesion 1.5.

This is one of those perfect, must have apps for anyone who needs to measure/assess screen 'real estate.'

Particularly useful for webdesign but has many other uses too (DTP, vector-imaging etc.)

New features I personally love are the 'Golden Section' options within frames and 'Calipers' within the rulers.

All options now span dual monitor setups too! Very handy.

All in all a five star app and one that I depend on daily.

"This is the best screen ruler."

December 31, 2003 | By taku.mac_dotmac

Version: xScope 1.0

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I have tried many screen rulers, including CharlieX Screen Rulers, AquaRuler, ARTIS Screen Tools, Tape Measure, GuideLiner, Trilthon Rulers, and Free Ruler, but xScope is by far the best screen ruler for OS X.
All the standard features are implemented cleanly, and in addition, the ruler can be rotated to an arbitrary angle. This is extremely useful for looking at the slope of graphs on the screen. The only other ruler which can be rotated that I know of is Ruler X, but it extends in a strange way. xScope is exactly what I have been looking for for a long time.

"Sexy Hog !"

November 18, 2003 | By Lex Luthor--2008

Version: xScope 1.0

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Again iconfactory/ARTIS produce an app that is available
free from Apple or from freeware alternatives. But these
guys produce such sweet eye candy, that if you have a
powerful enough mac to run them - it's very tempting.
Xscope 'costs' almost as much power usage/wastage
as running photoshop -CPU/RAM.

Would like a full featured screen capture tool added
to the 'Loupe' tool and it would be worth the drain on
my mac to run.
[edit] also a smaller possible default size for the
'Loupe' tool window.

A gorgeous yet elegant GUI and an excellent all-round
tool but a real hog on your macs resources.

"Very nice"

November 14, 2003 | By VersionTrackerUserOpinion

Version: xScope 1.0

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
xScope is beautifully designed, intelligently implemented, fairly priced, and undoubtedly useful to anyone who works with graphics on a Mac.

For a 1.0 release, this easily earns five stars from me, but what's a review without a wish list?

- Consolidate the windows. xScope creates about 20 hidden windows, some of which are quite large (2000x2000 !). This results in the app taking up about 46MB of real RAM and means that I can't leave it open all the time. Try creating your windows as needed, not all at once, and no larger than my screen.
- A cool thing for programmers would be to add a "Copy as NSColor declaration" to the Loupe menu which would copy text to the pasteboard based on the focused pixel. e.g. -

[NSColor colorWithCalibratedRed:0.94 green:0.80 blue:0.48 alpha:1.0]

Anyway, what a great addition to the Mac designer's toolbox. Thanks guys!
