"DANGEROUS: Throttled Turns OFF MOSX Firewall"

September 12, 2008  |  By zunipus

 |  Version: throttled 0.5

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Note folks, this is still beta software. Usually I would not give a star rating to a beta program, but this is an exception. I don't believe anyone should be using Throttled if what I discovered is a universal problem.

Good stuff: I found setting up the CLI version of Throttled to be easy thanks to the very good notes that are provided within the script itself. Bravo! (Always be sure to keep a locked source copy of the provided script and only work on a copy). I had no problem running it and was quite pleased to find that Throttled installs a startup item so that the script reruns itself at each startup. Who needs the Pro version GUI? Not me!

However, I no longer use Throttled for one critical reason:

BAD STUFF: Throttled turns OFF the Mac OS X Firewall. My testing is only in 10.4.11. I will be further testing in Leopard. Why it does this is beyond my comprehension. The fact that it does this is DANGEROUS. No way am I using Throttled again until this nasty blunder is solved. It comes down to this: The possibility of my Mac being invaded and compromised is not worth minor speedups in Internet access.

Conclusion: Watch this software for a solution to the Firewall blunder. Meanwhile: DO NOT USE Throttle.

Caveat: Someone please find a workaround for this dangerous problem or prove to me that it is harmless. I'd like to champion this program.

"Their idea of support is calling them via whois..."

July 17, 2007  |  By moire

 |  Version: throttled 0.4.6

Summary

...phone #!
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
This is a great product, an absolute must for those who want to run a Mac OS X server on a limited internet pipe. But if you don't like spending a day or more troubleshooting the program to try and get it to work this isn't for you...this wouldn't have been a problem if the support actually existed. There is NO support, I emailed them during business hours and got no reply. When I paid for the pro version of throttled I didn't even get my serial # until I did a whois on their domain and called them...if you rely on support then you may find it worth your time to avoid this product and all products this company makes as there is NO SUPPORT! But other then that this product is great, just takes some time getting used to how it works. TIP: If you have something like a FTP server which consumes a huge amount of ports like I did and which results in the throttled port being in use you will not be able to use the gui. Instead you will have to download the command prompt version, create the ipfw rules yourself and then start the throttled process yourself. It's not that hard if you don't mind reading the documentation and startup script for info on how to do both...

But again there is no support and since they seem to promise support this is a big no no to me...is anyone there?!

"An easy way to launch and stop Throttled"

Hi everybody.

Throttled is a perfect software. If you want to stop or start easily the engine, you can try my little utilities :

http://softwares.bajram.com/utilities/#Throttled_switch

And if you want more, buy the Throttled Pro shareware :-)

"Indispensable!"

Summary

If you have an asynchronous connexion or a not so fast speed and are running some sort of server, this is a boon! It works great, and isn't noticable in any way, except that your entire Internet experience is so much better. Huzzah!
Of course, it's not for the beginner, but once installed it's totally carefree.

"A must-have"

This is an absolute must have for anyone sending lots of data over the Internet. Although it is "command line" it is really easy to setup and forget.

Note that it is automatically configured for a 256Kbits/s (32 KBytes/s) upstream which is one of the most usual upload cap nowadays.

Perfect !

Awesome! Though a sys prefpane would be nice... Or at least a decent manual. Nevertheless, solved my problems :) Thanks a ton.

This is not for those who are afraid of the command line. But if you do have the patience and knowledge to set it up then it does its job and it does it well.
