    "Full featured, intuitive, low cost"

by learjeff on October 26, 2006

Pros: Great for recording, mixing, and mastering.

When I started computer recording (after decades of analog recording experience), I downloaded every free, shareware, or free DAW I could find. n-Track was the only one that worked right out of the box: hit Record and bingo, it recorded (from built-in soundcard). This trend continued: if I wanted to do something, I looked on the screen and clicked the button and bingo, it did what it said (well, mostly).

It has all the features we expect in a serious DAW (like Cubase, SONAR, etc.), including aux buses, groups, unlimited plugins, MIDI record/playback/editing.

It comes with some very good plugins (e.g., compressor, reverb) and has excellent built-in multi-band fully parametric EQ. Suports both DX and VST (and instrument plugins in both formats).

Supports automation of most parameters (track fader, aux sends, effect parameters).

    Sounds great!

It's not quite as beginner-friendly as GarageBand on a Mac, but other than that I think it's the easiest for a beginner. And it goes much further into pro features than GB does.

Great user forum; helpful and friendly.

Cons: MIDI editor is useful but not stellar, and be sure to save often because mis-clicks can cause crashes.

Some default parameters that make it easy for beginners with builtin soundcards have to be changed for use with aftermarket soundcards, so be sure to visit the forum and learn about these.

Program is reasonably reliable for a DAW, but crashes can happen. And on some systems, some folks just can't get it to work well and have better results with other programs. This is true of the other programs, too!

    "Powerfull and easy to use."

by Emiliorh on May 21, 2007

Pros: You don't have to be a well skilled user and don't have to invest to much to obtain great results.

I started recording and editing music with n-Track Studio v5 just a few weeks ago. So I am not a professional like some guys I read before downloading this software (thanks all of you for your reviews).

Nevertheless, I found n-track very intuitive and easy to use most of its features.

Once I finished a first job with the free version, I decided to buy the full one and loved it.

Updating to new features/versions is easier than I expected.

    "AWESOME and very PROFESSIONAL!!!"

by bratttywun on April 12, 2006

Pros: I have been in the music business for a very long time. And have recorded with a few grammy-award winning artists. Okay, now N-Track definately has the ability to do incredible things. You're only limited by your own creativity. The plug-ins are superb and very impressive. Not only is N-Track a fantastic starting block for recording and mixing music, it really has all that the expensive audio programs do. And don't get fooled... the reverb is really sweet sounding! Though the Compressor is very useful and functional, I prefer a little extra control. But if you are very creative, you can still tweak it just right for just about any use. And the multiband EQ is extremely effective and powerfull. Oh yeah... don't forget that it even comes with ReWire capability!

Cons: If I had to complain about anything, all I would say is that it's probably due for a graphic interface re-design. In other words, it just looks cheap. But don't be fooled! Other than that, the functionality of N-Track is superb!

    "A real winner for $50"

    by jes2005 on February 21, 2005

Pros: I'm just getting into recording at home on my computer and this program seems to have everything I need to get started. It has multi-tracks that are relatively easy to manipulate and pretty decent effects it seems. (I'm only currently working with the reverbs.) For $50 it seems like a real deal. And N-track is very generous with the length of its trial version. The company seems to be working on more of an honor system with the trial version than anything. Which is nice, because it does seem to take a while to find your way around this program. Overall I am very happy with it as a newcomer to the home recording scene and am planning on buying it tommorow. I'ld recommend it to anyone wanting to get into home recording without spending a bundle of money. I have no way to compare it with other recording software out there though, because I don't have any experience with any of those programs.

Cons: Definitely has a learning curve. But that just mean there are many cool features right? At first I didn't care for the reverb it had, which was one of the main effects that I care about, but then I found its "PG reverb" which is much nicer and easier to work with. Its way of creating and naming new tracks is a bit of a hassle, but that may just be partly due to my lack of complete understanding of the program. I would give it 4/5 stars for now because it isn't the easiest program to work with, but I bet later on as I get more experience with it that I'ld raise it to 5/5, so that's what I'm giving it now. For it's price, it definitely deserves 5/5.
