Editors' Review

Apple's iTunes is the 800-pound gorilla in the music and video jukebox world. The industry standard for more than five years, it has remained the trend-setter because of its connection to Apple's iPods and iPhone. This latest version sports one major new feature and several smaller ones.

In addition to the left sidebar, which was cleaned up in version 7, there's now an optional sidebar on the right. Called the Genius Bar, if you have an iTunes Store account it will offer up song and album recommendations for purchase. The Genius Bar, however, is only a derivative of the Genius Playlist, and that's the real biggie of version 8. To activate the playlist, hit the atomic symbol on the bottom right of the iTunes window while you're playing a song. The Genius algorithm will then create a playlist from the music already existing in your collection, made up of songs that it thinks have some connection to the first track. Since it's not limited solely by genre or other criteria, it can come up with some interesting choices.

Just as version 7 introduced the Cover Flow view, this update sees the introduction of a new art-based Grid view that can be used to look at your collection sorted by artist or album. Mouse over the art to reveal a play-it-now link. Other new features include a new visualization scheme called Magnetosphere, based on the iTunes plug-in of the same name, support for HD video, and the return of NBC to the iTunes Store.

For those unfamiliar with iTunes' base features, it makes video and music playback virtually identical. The iTunes Store replicates this experience, although be warned: it costs more to buy tracks that are DRM-free. Synchronization with iPods can be set to automatic or manual, and right-clicking a video clip lets you render it iPod-compatible. There are also smart playlists, CD burning, label printing, the ability to rip files in multiple formats except WMA, and network sharing. Rounding out the feature set are parental controls, integrated podcasts, and a smart-shuffle option. iTunes 8 should find a home on any media junkie's computer.

"On the whole, I am disappointed"

October 08, 2008  |  By LLLyra

 |  Version: iTunes 8

Pros

The view showing the album covers.

Cons

The option of NOT automatically creating songs with track numbers has unaccountably disappeared!

"Apple ... good. Genius ... not so much"

September 17, 2008  |  By davidmcbee

 |  Version: iTunes 8

Pros

Love album artwork and navigation and search features. Does pretty much everything you need a good media player to do.

Cons

Okay, seriously Apple, what were you thinking? This Genius feature stinks! How do Twisted Sister and Dexy's Midnight Runners end up in the same playlist? Sure I used to listen to them both when I had a mullet... Take a cue from PANDORA. They get it.

Summary

When they get the Genius feature figured out, this will be the end all of players. Give us the choice to "grow" the playlist, rather than basing the whole thing on one song. Even if we could seed the list with a few songs that would help. Twisted Sister, Scorpions, Ratt... then maybe you'd get an idea what I'm looking for. Rascal Flatts, Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood - cool country, get it?

"Solid but not spectacular"

September 13, 2008  |  By Andrew Baxter

 |  Version: iTunes 8

Pros

This program is still the industry leader. Great access to music, playlists, podcasts, and apps for my iPhone.

Cons

Genius is a sham! I have some of my brother's music on my computer because have one and he uses mine to sync his iPhone. When I tried Genius it grouped my christian songs in with Marilyn Manson and God Smack which I feel repulsive.

Summary

On what basis does Genius group songs together? I am a huge Apple fan but this Genius thing seems to be a waste. I would still recommend iTunes to everyone, but this update it no improvement.

"Very Average Media Player"

September 11, 2008  |  By UssjTrunks

 |  Version: iTunes 8

Pros

Still outperformed by Media Monkey in every possible category. Incredibly slow and sometimes buggy.

Cons

A solid choice for those using a fast computer or a Mac, but even then I would highly recommend switching to Media Monkey.

"Class Product boasting intuitive features"

September 11, 2008  |  By alexndrw

 |  Version: iTunes 8

Pros

Buy, Create, Organise, Share, View etc all for free! Used iTunes since 1st version. It's not slow, complainer needs a new computer/some serious maintenance! TIP. Buy DRM protected tracks, burn to CD and then rip CD to MP3 and use on any MP3 Player.

Cons

NONE NONE NONE NONE

Summary

If you want to organise your MP3's or other music, iTunes is one of the best options available. Must admit to cheating - in that - I use a Philips 20gb MP3 Player for my music but it's linked to iTunes Music Library/Folder and interacts amazingly well. The visualisations are stunning. The Equalizer's useful. Some services allow streaming you iTunes Library across the 'Net and of course you can share your Library with anyone on your home network. Buying is a synch and SO convenient!
TIP2: Import your CD music directly as MP3, create a Playlist with appropriate name, go to Library and select album(s) and drag into your new Playlist - viola! you're organised.
