Although iTunes has always been one of the best pieces of jukebox software available, the company continues to improve upon a great thing with version 5.0. The first major change that experienced iTunes users will notice is the revamped interface; the brushed-metal look is gone, but it's even snazzier than before. That said, all the features we've loved from past versions are still intact, including seamless iPod integration, smart playlists, CD burning, label printing, the ability to rip files in multiple formats (except WMA), network sharing, and of course, the enormously successful iTunes Music Store. Integrated Podcasts, iTunes's last major innovation, are still in the house, as are a few new and notable features. Parents will appreciate the control tools that allow them to disable access to podcasts and the Music Store, as well as prevent kids from purchasing explicit songs. And all users will benefit from the new Smart Shuffle feature, which gives greater control over random play. Whether you're already among the converted or have yet to try this top-notch player, iTunes 5 should find a home on any music lover's computer.

"absolutely useless"

October 04, 2005  |  By mhoke63

 |  Version: iTunes 5.0.1

Pros

Legal Music Download

Cons

DRM, DRM, DRM. Digital Restrictions management is not a good thing. If I buy a song, I should be able to do what I want with the song. Which is why I burn to CD and rip into the Ogg Vorbis format. Also, the user-friendly interface does not give me what I want to do. I want more control in what I do. It gives me nothing. I suggest using winamp which you can use your iPod with. Yes, iTunes is user-friendly, but it is absolute crap. it also has no suppor for Ogg Vorbis, and technically, no support for mp3 (It converts it on the fly), but I try not to use proprietary formats. But when I am in my Mandriva (GNU/Linux) boot, I just use juk, which is awesome. Apple appeals to the masses on this one and give no usability and tweaking options. But mainly, the Digital Restrictions management is what irks me the most of the whole thing.

"Pathetic that apple can't create a "glitch" free update."

September 15, 2005  |  By pchyld

 |  Version: iTunes 5.0.1

Pros

Nothing, I can't use it as it is not compatible with my norton internet security.

Cons

Apparently this latest "update" is not compatible with my norton internet security and I therefore can not use it. What makes this all so tragic is that I can not find the 4.9 version and am therefore without access to my itunes... HELP!

"Faster, sleeker and more features."

September 13, 2005  |  By Randy Decker

 |  Version: iTunes 5.0.1

Pros

iTunes 5 has a number of performance improvements. It launches much faster, makes better use of screen real estate and has a generally more polished appearance. iTunes plays video in a small window or full screen. It will play any Quicktime movie with the same quality as the Quicktime Player. One can now use the iTunes interface to organize and play your videos as well as music. The scrub bar is also much more responsive than it was in previous versions.

Cons

The divider between the playlist pane and the library pane is now very small. However, you can still resize the panes by grabbing anywhere near the divider.

"Don't Update!"

September 08, 2005  |  By superdreamkilla

 |  Version: iTunes 5.0.1

Pros

None

Cons

Program is larger because of Parental controls, useless shuffle controls, and crap for that expensive itunes store. Eats up more ram than ever. Ugly new skin, NO LONGER BRUSHED METAL! It is simply a fade from dark to light grey. The display window is square! The whole program window is square, no more rounded edges. Restrictions on resizing the program, has to be bigger and take up more space on the screen than before, this has been happening in the last few updates. Can't resize the playlist section without a very large minimum size either. Volume control has been moved from under the play/stop buttons to the right side of them, takes away from the display screen size. No border on the left and right sides of the window, looks awkward. UGLY!!!!
