    Version: iTunes for Windows 6.2

"Great audio file program, but the music store needs one considerable change"

    by Stinger15 on March 11, 2006

Pros: Not much change from the 6.0. It orders your mp3, acc, m4p, and m4a collection. Has many options for ordering, playing, random shuffle. Has podcasts, but they do not impress me much.

Has a great visualizer, does not need much RAM. View options have a large variety of information for songs. Automatically creates folders for each artist with albums instead of mp3 files spread out in a the iTunes music folder.

Great sound quality. Great video quality for the videos. Not slow at all. Mini player is ok, it doesn't have much for options at all.

I would recommend this as your main music player, but only for that.

Cons: You must have a seperate program to get rid of duplicate songs. It automatically converts WMAs, which creates a new file and takes up double space on your harddrive. Also the store is very slow at browsing.

The thing that really makes me mad about Apple is buying music from them. DO NOT buy from them unless you have an iPod. The format that you buy it in is a protected m4p, in which only iPod can play, no other mp3 player. I have an iRiver and I can't get my songs on there because of Apple.

The built-in CD ripper is really slow and only rips in m4a format, which is also only compatible with iPod. Does not see an external CD writer. Must have a built-in CD writer.

If you have a different CD writer installed (i.e. BACKPACK CD-REWRITER) iTunes will notice it and come up with a message saying that there is another CD writer program installed, reinstal iTunes... very annoying.

You are correct, MP4's will work on most all mp3 players. But if you read the review more carefully, I said M4P's. These are audio files downloaded from the iTunes store, and recently they made it where you couldn't even rip CD's with these files. They are taking away the rights to something I bought, and I'm very angry.

MP4 and AAC format songs are not Apple formats and will not only work on their products. you can transfer these songs to any computer and play them in any music player that supports mp4's. if your music player doesn't play them, then just download a MP4 or AAC codec.

IMHO you shouldn't be aloud to talk about what you have no idea what you are talking about.

I have recenetly figured out that you can rip in mp3 (and many other) formats. But I also do think that m4a shouldn't be the default. Apple's trying really hard to take over the music industry with thier own stuff, without pissing off anyone. Not working. Why can't they just leave mp3 as a universal format? Oh yea that's right, is all they care about is money <_<.

I agree that iTunes is very Apple and iPod-centric, and is not as handy for other hardware. HOWEVER, it DOES let you rip CDs to WAV and MP3 formats, with the ability to set bitrate, quality, and constant-variable parameters. Go to Edit> Preferences> Advanced> Import to find the options.
