Apple's iTunes used to be simply a versatile jukebox program that brought Mac users into the digital-music world, but new features that tune up its jukebox and the much-ballyhooed iTunes Music Store push it over the top. Seamless integration with the iPod, smart playlists, CD burning, and label printing create an 800-pound gorilla. With version 4.9 Apple has welcomed the Podcasting community into the fold, making it ridiculously easy to tune in to this exciting new medium. Finding and downloading podcasts works exactly as the same way as downloading tunes from the Music Store, except that all content is free. Another one of our favorite features is Party Shuffle, which keeps a queue of songs at the ready that you can rearrange. iTunes supports MP3, AAC, AIFF, WAV, and a proprietary format called Apple Lossless, which gives you uncompressed audio quality with files half the size. The Bon Jour sharing feature lets you see and play the playlists and music libraries of other users on your network.

One unfortunate quirk is how iTunes handles unprotected WMA files. We would prefer the program just play those files, rather than re-encode them into AAC format. Regardless, iTunes continues to be one of the best jukeboxes available.

"Awesome"

August 15, 2005  |  By Terdog

 |  Version: iTunes for Windows 4.9

Pros

Plays MP3 files perfeectly, has build in cd-ripping/Mp3 eccoding, with NO restrictions, and its easy to create custom playlists

Cons

Can only use an Ipod to import/export music, and as good as the Itunes music store is, those file can not be exported by anyother player than an Ipod. Its not skinable either (but considering the amount of crappy skins out there, that may be a plus)

"Incredible Jukebox and More"

August 14, 2005  |  By S.Hall

 |  Version: iTunes for Windows 4.9

Pros

One of my favorite features is the ability to share music on my LAN with my family -- we can all listen to each others music seamlessly. The features and ease-of-use of this product is a cut above the rest.

I can see why Download.com gives it such high ratings, it truly deserves them. Give it a try for a week.

"iConsider it one of the best around"

August 09, 2005  |  By cnetfan86

 |  Version: iTunes for Windows 4.9

Pros

Extremeley easy to use from the very start! The free version offers a library, Podcasts, shuffle, equalizer, visualizer, artist's artwork, radio, iTunes music store, default playlists, make your own playlist, music import function, convert to AAC, quick browse through your media by genre, artist or album, and burn. Using each of the features is neat because it's not only easy, but fun to use. An external QuickTime to play videos and PictureViewer is also included part of the pack. Those who can afford to buy music & the full program can easily enjoy finding, downloading, customizing, & burning effortlesly, as well as not having to worry using any other software by doing so. The full version also includes joining songs together & little stuff like that. For free it's worth the try. (If you enjoy using iTunes, you will love OSX.)

Cons

However, iTunes limits the amount of features that are available on its competitors. There is only one color & one skin to chose from, limited choices to convert file types, can only play music & nothing else like DVDs (I guess that's why it's not called iMedia) and no cover designer. Even though QuickTime takes care of the movie problem, it should have an option to actually be part of iTunes. Also, lower end computers may not be fully compatible becuase it takes up more memory than its competitors. If you prefer features that iTunes doesnt have, then you probably wont like iTunes. RealPlayer and newer burning software like Nero excells at what iTunes cant accomplish.

"Better than Musicmatch & Windows Media Player, unless you're in my situation..."

August 02, 2005  |  By TJ Thompson

 |  Version: iTunes for Windows 4.9

Pros

The Radio Stations are great! There's around 250 of them, and they come in all varieties. The setup is different from Musicmatch and even Windows Media Player, but that's not such a bad thing. If you spend maybe 10 to 15 minutes browsing around the setup options, you'll find a comfortable setup. It works well, especially if you don't mind using MP3 of AAC format audio. Why use anything else, unless you have to?

Cons

Apple iTunes can only connect to a small list of digital music players, most notably their very own iPod. But what if you don't have one of their compatible players? I have an RCA Lyra 1070, which downloads in two ways:

1. Drag & Drop WMA format music to the player's drive

2. Use Musicmatch to connect to it so it can convert any other media format to the annoying MPY format. Thus, I can't listen to my music in WMA format (all of it now) unless I use iTunes to make a new copy of it all in AAC or MP3 format. Why would I double the memory I use for digital media just so I can use it with my Lyra and my iTunes? Rumor on the Net says iTunes 5, scheduled for release in October, will be able to play WMA format files.

 |  Version: iTunes for Windows 4.9

Pros

Can use with iPod and looks nice

Cons

The player is just a music player and that's it. Other players like Windows Media and Winamp can also play video and have more skins.

When i downloaded iTunes, it took a long time to start up and i just use the iPod plugin for Winamp
