"Keeps getting better"

February 03, 2007  |  By macaddict6765

 |  Version: iShell 4.5r4

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Although iShell has some rough spots, it just keeps getting better and better!

The new Gizmos promise to be a boost to rapid productivity. The "Magic" Commands are fabulous.

First getting one's head around how to create in iShell takes a bit, but after you get started, the capabilities are almost endless.

The user community is fabulous and has never failed to help me through rough spots. Post to the list and you WILL be helped.

"Pros & Cons of iShell"

November 11, 2004  |  By Nueesch

 |  Version: iShell 4.0r5

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I have been using iShell very intensly for the last four weeks. I built a huge project with 360 images many buttons and a kind of state machine controlled by a tabbed data file with 300+ data rows and 15 columns. I started off working myself through all the tutorials.

Pros:
You have a vast library of events, commands and elements. You can nearly do everything what you can imagine. It is quite fast. The learning curve for such a complex environment is OK. I needed about 3-4 days working through all the tutorials and tests of my own to be able to start my own project. The programming environment is stable and quite professional. It is really amazing what you can do!

Cons:
The half an hour tutorial to be up and running is a kind of a joke. The project is allready fully built. The tutorials are not very professional. They have many typos und the things you build look ugly. But it is still the fastest way to learn it.
The support is fast but with zero technical help. I did not get a usable answer to any of my questions. The free documentation is absolut minimal and contains no examples. The runtime module seems to be very buggy at least on OS X. You can only use the letterbox type of window. Fullscreen mode does not work properly (the picture has an offset of about 150 pixels off the screen) nor does Custom mode (all the mouse up events do not work anymore). The wrapper does not work either. I had to switch it off to get rid of having an error message after every click of the mouse. Because of the sparse documentation you have to figure out a lot by yourself. You need a lot of time for very simple things. For instance resizing a window. I still don't now how you do it. You can buy a book/CD but you cannot download it :-(. A big handicap if you have to do a project within a very short time and live abroad.
Because of all this cons iShell is clearly too expensive. For a bigger project you additionally need to buy support which makes it even more expensive.

iShell: You will love it and hate it at the same time!

"Developer's Dream"

February 01, 2004  |  By NRenfree

 |  Version: iShell 3.0.5

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I've been using iShell for a few years now and it just keeps getting better and better. With the promise of iWrap and iBurn (1-click packager and project burner), my project future looks briliant. I work in a an environment where repeated "small" project changes are the norm. iShell's modular design allows me to handle them with ease. I used to work with Authorware and retro-fits were a nightmare!

The learning curve of iShell is really short, so go ahead and download it and see the amazing projects you can build before you even know you're trying.

"Too reliant on QT"

January 27, 2004  |  By VersionTrackerUserOpinion

 |  Version: iShell 3.0.5

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
This thing is way too reliant on Quicktime. For making a Mac-only release, there are much better tools, so the only place this is (kind of) handy is for cross platform development. But, since QT is so scarcely installed on Windows computers, it's way too iffy to count on it.

All in all, there are better tools out there for the job.

"iShell is the greatest!!!!"

I love iShell. I have been working in it for about a year. It is one of the easiest programs to use. I was very worried when I first started to look at it. But it has proven to be one of the best programs I have ever used. I am also part of a student group at Ball State that are working on a program in the Mobile version.

To be honest, no words can describe iShell accurately. Try it for yourself. I did this be doing a real world project in both iShell and Director. Mid way through, I just dropped Director and completed the project in iShell. You could download iShell and give it a spin without paying for it. So why not?

"Great stuff"

October 16, 2003  |  By Hector Navarro

 |  Version: iShell 3.0

Summary

iShell it's been one of my best investments.

Powerful software, easy to learn, easy to work with.

I love to be able to create my titles on a Mac and be able to publish for Mac and/or Windows with minimum hassle.

The same day I downloaded iShell I made a demo for a client with it (I had the art), it's that easy to get yourself started.

The best part about iShell is the people, both the persons that work at Tribeworks and the user group members. If you have a question you'll get an asnwer, if you need help you will get it FAST. With iShell, you don't buy software, you become part of a family.

You can even start using it for FREE to make up your own mind.
