"Expense worth time saved"
Version: iRip 2.1
Pros
20 bucks seems like a lot to me to do what Doug's AppleScripts will do for free (http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/scripts08.php). However, Doug says the scripts are not recommended for large-scale operations. I needed to back up my failing iPod, which has a number of issues when copying. iRip adds songs to a playlist as they are copied to iTunes and does not create extra copies of tracks outside iTunes' library. Because of this, iRip's process was the best of the apps I tried for all the manual error-checking I needed to do.
Cons
Sometimes would not create a playlist when using "Copy selected playlist to iTunes."

"Unreliable with external drives"
Version: iRip 2.1
Pros
Excellent interface
Fast
Retireved several hundred lost songsCons
Buggy
Unreliable if your music is on an external drive
Tech support seems unconcerned about this bugSummary
The developer's web site has very little troubleshooting info, and the software often does not work with external drives. If you music collection is on an internal drive you should be OK, but if, like me, your music is on an external dive you'll want to look elsewhere. Automatic iTune downloading did not work. Tech support acknowledged the issue and said to just import the song manually. After doing so for several hundred songs the software simply quit working.
This would be excellent software if the developed would fix that flaw. They should at least acknowledge it on their web site so people can make an informed decision before paying for the software. -
