"Best of a bad bunch"

October 23, 2008  |  By Frank Pryor

 |  Version: iRatchet 1.85

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
My business is service based. I've been looking for a simple app that will allow me to produce estimates, turn them into invoices send them to clients and track payment status. I've looked at them all and tried most of them. iRatchet is less troublesome, less confusing, less bug-ridden than most of them.

It's not enormously intuitive, but once you get the hang of it, it's functional. Unlike the vast majority of the other options.

Tech support is JUST as bad as the rest of them. All these apps run their tech support through their user forums which the developers rarely, sometimes never, visit.

"Try it first..."

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I've used this software for over a year now, and I am now shopping for it's replacement.

It seems as if the software is written for people who do primarily service type jobs (i.e. freelancers) and as such everything is built around "projects." You have to buy into this philosophy totally and ignore everything you know about more traditional account software packages that revolve around "invoices" if you want to be happy.

some things that take getting used to:
* the main window is very cluttered and visually distracting
* data entry is nonstandard, counter-intuitive, fights against the user (tab key is wonky) and generally annoying
* you can't backdate an invoice (handy if you want to put in historical invoices and have everything in one place)
* the search function is not helpful (no way to search by invoice number)
* every line items has to have a date, even on things where it is inappropriate (physical items)
* invoices are based on an HTML rendering engine, which limits customization and generally sucks.

It seems based on the developers forums that development has slowed to almost non-existent and the users have largely stopped asking for anything or needing support...

Anyway, just my 2 cents.

"I have to agree, very confusing software"

Summary

I bought this software to track hours spend on one customer but have to say it's quite difficult to use. I can't find a way to put a meaningful description in item/service field as the field is only tiny.
There is no way to open the actual invoice and enter a full description of the services.

Would happy switch to something better

"So Painful I want to cry..."

Summary

This program claims to be simple but makes absolutely no sense to me, and I am not stupid. I am a graphic artist, not an accountant, so that is part of the problem, but I have never used such a non-intuitive program. I have continued to hobble along with it due to a lack of good options on the Mac but am looking to switch ASAP.

"Great... but ugly invoices and no multi-currency..."

...support
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
This is a great app... if youâ??re based in North America. Unfortunately, iRatchet still lacks multi-currency support for businesses who have to invoice in more than one currency. Itâ??s invoice templates also look very American by nature and leave much to be wished for. If only iRatchet would sport the flashy templates and invoice/report customization features of Billings 2 or iBiz 3.

"Very nice"

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Running a towing business, I was using MoneyWorks. Very powerful and also quite expensive, at least to me. I also found it way too complicated, and at times, too restrictive for changes I needed to make once an invoice was set in stone. It's also a full accounting app, which is great, but I've discovered I don't like using it, nor need it. It's a chore. So even though I paid a tidy sum for MoneyWorks, I went looking for something else. Something easier.

What's ironic, when I was looking for an app that would generate invoices, I had taken a quick look at iRatchet and dismissed it as too simple, not what I thought I needed. Well, after using MoneyWorks for 6 months, the big gun, I kept saying to myself there's got to be something easier that fits my company's needs. Did a search and iRatchet came up.

After running this business for 3 years, I've learned what's needed and what's actually not needed in an app for keeping track of customers, insurance companies, and most of all, profit. So I took another test drive of iRatchet just to see what it might do for me. Well, knowing my needs better now, I dug deeper into iRatchet and realized it fit like a glove.

I've been on the iRatchet forum this past week getting questions answered, reading others views, how they use it, etc., even making suggestions. I must say, the developer is Johnny-on-the-Spot.

So, with a great program, super support, making great invoices, and more features planned, and very easy to use, very important, which is why I'm moving away from MoneyWorks, I bought iRatchet.

When I originally looked for an app for my business, I thought a full accounting app was what I needed. I learned that 99% of my needs was invoicing (income), and the remainder was keeping track of expenses, which iRatchet can also do for my needs. iRatchet is not a full accounting app as most people think of accounting. But with online banking today, at least for me, a full fledged accounting app is overkill.

If you've been in business long enough to finally realize what you need and what you don't need for keeping records, checkout iRatchet. You may be very surprised that the ease of iRatchet also fits you like a glove.

"Nearly Perfect"

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I've tried them all and settled on iRatchet. I've been been a registered user of iRatchet now for a few months now. I use it on a daily basis and I've become very familiar with its strengths and weaknesses.

EASE OF USE: 5/5
iRatchet just makes sense. I was up and running making invoices and tracking projects in under 5 minutes from my first launch. The interface is clean and thoughtfully designed. Projects follow a logical workflow that helps keeps thing in order. iRatchet integrates with iCal seamlessly to help keep track of invoices that are past due and projects that need attention. It's also very simple to import clients from Address Book. iRatchet even has the option to make auto-backups to prevent data loss.

SUPPORT / DOCUMENTATION: 5/5
The developer is extremely committed to this product as evidenced by his instantaneous replies to tech support questions both via email and his user forum. If a bug is reported there is a new version released with a fix in a matter of days. Try getting that kind of support from Intuit. The documentation could be a little better but the speed most questions are responded to more than makes up for it.

FEATURES: 4/5
This is the only area that needs improvement. iRatchet does a fantastic job of tracking projects and creating invoices but it lacks reporting features. The ability to show income, taxes due, product sales per category etc. would make The developer has indicated reporting will be added soon.

QUALITY / STABILITY: 5/5
iRatchet has never crashed on me. Any minor issues I have had with the program were cleared up within hours of reporting them to the developer.

PRICE: 5/5
Under $50 for an elegant, easy to use application that makes managing your business a snap. It pays for itself in no time.

"This is the one."

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I spent several weeks looking for the right tool to handle my invoices. I tried at least 8 different apps because I wanted to move away from Quickbooks. I'm in the tech field and my invoices include time and fixed prices. This application nailed the feature set I wanted with a few features I didn't know I wanted until I had them.

If you need an invoicing and time management application that is rapidly developed and constantly improving I recommend you try the demo and see for yourself. I bought my copy before my demo ran out.

This was the only app that I liked right away and it looks and feels like a Mac app.

Summary

Can't seem to add more than 23 hours and 59 minutes in time to any project. Can't apply any discounts - this can crash the app. It's got great potential but I'll stick to iBiz for a while longer.
