    Version: iPod-Linux Installer 0.3c

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I installed the whole thing just for the heck of it and all I can say is it's going to stay on my 3G iPod! I just love the idea of having a variant of Linux on my iPod! BUT I mainly boot into Linux or the games. Audio playback is crappy with the files I'm listening to and I am sure as hell not going to re-encode all my AACs and high-bitrate-MP3s to 128kbit MP3s.
Anyways, if I want to listen to my music I just restart into Apple's iPod OS.

BTW: Make sure to check out iDoom, a Doom port for the iPodLinux. Bet you never even remotely thought about using the two words "iPod" and "Doom" in the same sentence :D

As or the installer: It works as advertised, saving you some manual Terminal-typeing and stuff. Nice. I'd like more updates though, no that podzilla 2 is being worked on.

    Version: iPod-Linux Installer 0.3c

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I tried this on a 3G iPod mainly because of the very interesting recording options. I did have quite a few freezes and I do look forward to its future development. MP3 and AAC playback quality is not comparable to the one I get running the Apple OS. Still I like the high resolution recordings it is able to perform.
It does not accept the Griffin iTalk as a recording mic though, which I wish it would. Yes I know, this thing is kinda crappy - but still it's quite handy when it comes to a minimal equipment to carry around. It would be sooo nice if I could use it for 44,1 MHz recordings running iPod-Linux. Is there any chance to make this possible?

    Version: iPod-Linux Installer 0.3a

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Although this software has great potential, and is usefull in certain situations, (like when apple's software gives You the 'Battery Low' shutdown, You can squeeze a little extra using this soft. (You can load a track and keep playing that over and over, so the harddisk ain't gonna spin, thus having the little battery juice left used on only playing. Playing a track is very little stress on the battery, loading the track IS!)

BUT!! At the 1.5 update of the 'iPod updater software', I chose to 'Restore' the iPod, making it delete all tracks (etc.), updated to 1.5, iTunes->iPod synced my music, and installed the 'iPod-Linux' software. -And updated from within the 'iPod-Linux'. (Checked for new update of 'iPod-Linux', and installed it.) THAT BROKE PLAYBACK THROUGH APPLE'S SOFTWARE! =(
I still could play MP3's (No AAC's) through the 'iPod-Linux' Software.. (Choppy, stuttering, sometimes ok, but mostly not.)

SO.. Check it out before You take for granted, that Your iPod is in working state.. -I left home with a "broken" iPod, and I'm still traumated! ;P

But still I have to recommend this software, and encourage further development! =)

    Word.

    Version: iPod-Linux Installer 0.3a

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Installed on my first generation iPod with no problems. However, on a 1G iPod, the music playback is pretty unusable. I'm going to try and install it on a 3G iPod over the weekend though. I believe that while it plays mp3's marginally well, the real issues start when you add variable bit rate or (of course) any of Apple's DRM goodies to the mix. So in summary, mostly for the bleeding edge earlier adopters right now (although the install is super-easy).

I'll probably leave it installed as a picture/text viewer, but on the 1G that's about all it's going to do for me. Eager to see the results on a 3G though--particularly with regards to mic recording!
