Editors' Review

Although there have been several shareware choices to allow you to copy songs from your iPod to your computer, the freeware field has been empty--until now.

iDump offers a clean, spreadsheet-style layout that displays all music on your iPod. That lengthy list can be narrowed via the search function. Songs can be organized by terms as familiar as song name or artist to the more esoteric year, bit rate, or even location on the iPod. The app displays the song's iPod path, cracking Apple's unusual file-saving protocol. A main window tab takes you to output options, and from there you just have to choose your songs and hit Copy. Clicking once on a song selects it, and there's also a smart feature that plays the song you've selected in iTunes. Clocking in at under 1MB, iDump is small enough to live on your iPod. We'll let you figure out why that's a good thing.

iDump doesn't automatically import backed-up songs into iTunes once they've been copied to your hard drive, a definite drawback. That's a small quibble, though, compared to the usefulness that this app offers up for free.

"simple and freeware that does what it says"

August 22, 2007  |  By ackmondual

 |  Version: iDump 24

Pros

-works on my HP 4th gen 20GB ipod

-easy installation

-clean interface

-intuitive to use

-options to save onto hardrive by custom scheme (default being by artist / album/ title)

-allows you to preview songs as you decide which to mark or not

-sorting options and searches to find specific songs quickly

-freeware

Cons

-attempting to transfer some songs caused an error popup window saying something about the name of the file was amiss. I had to click the OK button for each popup to resume transferring. The song names did contain unusual characters (like squares). However, this meant i wasn't able to start the transfer and come back the next morning to find it done. I had to manually click them away. I only had 7.6GB of music left to transfer, so that took less than 5 minutes left on a USB 2.0 connection

-i set WinAmp as my default player, so iDump used that to preview songs. Unfortunately, WinAmp couldn't preview the mp4 files I had

-if I deny internet access to iDump through Zone Alarm firewall, it doesn't seem to work

"A+ Program, Too easy..."

November 08, 2007  |  By deadleaf

 |  Version: iDump 24

Pros

It's very simple to use and all you have to do is search or select! After that, insert what output folder you want it in and it will be copied there. It's also very small for what it can do, so yes, its the best bang for the buck.

"Amazing !"

November 08, 2007  |  By Kat7155

 |  Version: iDump 24

Pros

It was FREE with an extremely fast dowload & setup. It recognized my iPod immediately & pulled all 1200 songs off without slowing down. I paid $20 for another program that after a year of begging for tech support never would even recognize my iPod. iDump is amazing !!

Cons

The update feature was confusing & I'm still not sure what I'm supposed to do.

"Amazing!"

October 29, 2007  |  By dwaary

 |  Version: iDump 24

Pros

It only took 28 minutes from start to finish to pull 3,700+ songs from my iPod to My Music folder. The program even kept all the correct file names without garbling them like many other iPod to iTunes transfer programs have done for me in the past. Incredibly simple to use, especially if you use the "control + a" shortcut.

Cons

Would have liked the program to dump the music directly into iTunes instead of My Music folder; however, that is a small inconvenience to pay when faced with the alternative of setting up a small network and transferring the files the hard way.

"WORKED LIKE A CHARM"

October 24, 2007  |  By ramprat101

 |  Version: iDump 24

Pros

Downloaded 341 songs stuck on my gen1 nano to my hard drive. then back to I tunes. In a matter of minutes, The Ctrl + a trick was a real time saver

Cons

Would have been nice if there was an easier way to load right to I tunes. There might be, but I couldn't find it.
