"Have Always Loved It: But Had a Scary DeFrag Session..."

February 18, 2014  |  By NotElegantlyStated

 |  Version: iDefrag 2.2.6

Pros

Have used it for years over several versions and it has always seemed to work as advertised and has allowed me to keep my older systems continuing to run with better speed. Easy to use. Simple interface

Cons

After years of using it successfully I ran an iDefrag session on my startup drive (after checking/repairing with Disk Utility, etc.) and for some reason it rendered my drive un mountable. And with a problem that Disk Utility couldn't see as a problem nor repair. Luckily I had a fairly recent backup, but had just added some content that I didn't want to lose.

To the developers great credit, he did try to walk me through many many complex command line and other steps to troubleshoot and/or fix what seemed to be a directory error perhaps introduced by iDefrag. I went through many of these steps unsuccessfully and eventually had to wipe the hard drive anyway and go back to my month old backup. It was a lot of work just to have to bail on it, and it shook my confidence in the software, but as I said, the developer really tried to help me out.

Creating Bootable DVDs to optimize a startup disk has been dicey. Many times the process fails, but not due to a DVD media write error.

Summary

I think it's a pretty great program. I had settled on it (and as is often the case for me) then just worked with it as my tool of choice, not being the type to keep searching for that even better tool. After my scare with the HD not mounting I wondered if there might be a more popular app for this and am still open to suggestions. But it seems to do what it says.

"Not allowed to read my own HD"

December 29, 2013  |  By marikavs

 |  Version: iDefrag 2.2.6

Pros

Don't know

Cons

Not allowed to read my own HD

Summary

I wanted to see if my HD with OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) on my old laptop (late 2008; 15" MacBook Pro) needed to be defragmented after it's become slow lately, but the iDefrag demo doesn't let me read my own HD. In my book, that's a FAIL.

"useless freeware is one thing, but..."

June 17, 2012  |  By jhencken

 |  Version: iDefrag 2.2.1

Pros

It doesn't seem to harm anything but your pocket book. Is that a Pro?

Cons

If you a recent version of OSX (certainly if you use Lion), this program is redundant with the defragging built into the OS itself. (See MacMost videos)

It's bad enough to make freeware with no real function, but to charge for software that specifically plays on users' ignorance and makes them think something useful is happening when it is not...

Snake oil, anyone?

"Great Product!"

October 09, 2011  |  By 0h6r53

 |  Version: iDefrag 2.1.0

Pros

Every program loads faster.

Cons

There was a glitch with the "System Preferences" quick link in my "Dock". Quick fix was replacing it with a fresh one .

Summary

My G5 will be 10 years old in a couple of months. Over the years, I've done the basic maintenance, and it's still a solid system. I've used it as a base for a home recording studio, as well as everything else. Over the past couple years it began to slow up. I was reluctant using using a defrag program until I read reviews on iDefrag. I gave it a go and I'm sure glad I did. This thing flys just like it did when it was new! If you have an older system like mine BUY IT! You'll be glad you did.

"Boot time reduced 25%"

September 26, 2011  |  By jlozes

 |  Version: iDefrag 2.0.5

Pros

Works as advertized.

Cons

No Mac AppStore availability

Summary

The fully compatible Mac OS X Lion version of iDefrag 2 was recently released (v2.1.0) -- which now allows boot-time defragmentation. After running iDefrag on my MacBook Pro (Core 2 Duo, Mac OS X Lion), the boot time went from 78 seconds to 58 seconds (25% improvement). Additionally, all applications seemed to start faster (observed - no metrics).

There was a lot of conficting information on the Internet -- on whether defragmentation had any value on Macs. In my experience, the improvement was well worth the price.

"Good, solid utility. V.happy, works great on a G5 PPC."

June 21, 2011  |  By topsturner

 |  Version: iDefrag 2.0.5

Pros

As other reviews have said - good layout, excellent options (how quickly you want to take defragging basically), very simple to use and best of all, stable.

Cons

$30 / £20+ seems quite high - should be about 2/3 of that imo.

Summary

The other positive reviews are spot-on. My G5 is a PPC running leopard but this is very stable, happily running in the background as I type. Can't see why you wouldn't like it to be honest. Didn't give it the 5 stars 'spectacular' but who would call a defrag util 'spectacular'?? :-)

"IDefrag does exactly what it's supposed to do."

September 13, 2010  |  By drglenn

 |  Version: iDefrag 2.0.5

Pros

Many options, does what it's supposed to do, stable, does not cause file system problems as many others do, easy to understand interface, excellent support.

Cons

Too slow - but not slower than other optimizers (like TechTool Pro) which do not offer the options this product does. ALL optimizers are too slow! Disks have gotten a lot bigger, but not a lot faster, so this is par for the course.

Summary

I have used this product since its inception. Back "in the day" Alsoft had a great defragmenter which died with OS 9. They never resurrected it, but this came along and works beautifully. Tech support is great - and they speak REAL English - since the company is in the UK! Recommended highly if you are an anal retentive who hates file fragments, and wants them in the right place.

"Why bother"

August 05, 2010  |  By iowastate

 |  Version: iDefrag 2.0.3

Pros

if you have used up 90% of your hard drive it is usefull

Cons

unless you have filled your drive almost to capacity there is no reason to defrag a Mac

Summary

this is the type of download that gives a user almost no use and is provided as a free or low cost download in all other instances. $30 is just ridiculous for a useless item that provides you with nothing that is not already included in a Mac.

Full Specifications

What's new in version 2.0
  • You can now run the offline algorithms without needing to create a boot disk; iDefrag can now reboot into a special mode where it has exclusive access to the disk.
  • We've added the ability to defragment a single file.
  • The online algorithm will now reliably skip files that are in use (regardless of whether or not they are using file locking).
  • The Statistics pane will give you information about compressed files on Snow Leopard. (iDefrag always preserves compression.)
  • The Inspector now shows more information about files.
  • Creating a boot disk with iDefrag can be done via a menu option within iDefrag and should be simpler than using CDMaker.
  • It is now a 64 bit application.
  • The Optimize algorithm can now deal with volumes that have very little, or heavily fragmented, free space (and the "skip files...due to lack of free space" preference has been removed).
  • New and improved look.
