South African-born music prodigy Jean-Philip Groblert -- founder and frontman of synthpop outfit St. Lucia -- has a long touring history that predates his popular Brooklyn-based music project. Before drawing crowds with anthemic retro-forward tracks off 2012's "St. Lucia" and "When The Night" and 2016's "Matter," Groblert spent much of his teen years on the road with South Africa's prestigious Drakensberg Boys Choir.
"The biggest thing I learned from that is not getting bored so easily and occupying myself, during long drives," he told Download.com. "I learned to listen to a lot of music, read, and look at my surroundings and stuff like that."
These days, Groblert, who's performed at Lollapalooza and Coachella and toured with Ellie Goulding, keeps himself busy on the road by writing new music on his laptop and playing around with apps on his mobile device. Read on for five of his favorites.
Original interview took place on June 20, 2014.
My favorite photography app is Mextures, and it's like VSCO, but it actually has more and better features, in my opinion. You can add all these cool overlays to your photos and make them look really textural and awesome.
I'll occasionally post photo collages from our tours. Diptic is a collaging app, and you get really cool, different shapes that you can use to make cool photo collages.
A friend of mine introduced me to ComiXology. It's like Kindle for comic books. I've been reading a bunch of different comics with that.
I read a lot of books on my phone and my iPad, so I use iBooks a lot.
My favorite game is SimCity, so I'll spend a lot of time playing that. There's something I love about strategy games. There's something about the symmetry of stuff. I can't explain it. It's like Tamagotchi, a digital animal that you have to feed and keep alive. It's like what this game is about: having a digital city with a bunch of people running around that you have to keep happy. It has to do with the fact that I really like design and interior decoration and architecture. In some ways, it allows me to do that in my fantasy world.
