"Great image browser, simple and versatile"

    November 29, 2009  |   By kitj

    Version: gBrowser 2.0b6

    Pros

Browses Finder folders directly (no need to import).
    Generates thumbnails quickly.
    Lots of sort options.
    Displays images with transparency correctly.
    Customizeable background color.
Can move, rename, and delete files and folders directly in gBrowser.

    Cons

Nothing. (There was one sort option I felt was missing, but the developer added it in when asked.)

    Summary

gBrowser is a fast, simple, and versatile image browser. Things I like about it:

Views images directly from the Finder without importing them into a database (like iPhoto). Changes you make in the Finder show up immediately in gBrowser. You can also perform Finder actions in gBrowser, including moving, renaming, and deleting files and folders.

You can bookmark your favorite Finder folders. There is also a separate free add-in that puts a "Browse Images" link in the Finder sidebar to quickly open the currently viewed folder.

Thumbnails are generated quickly. I review folders with hundreds or even thousands of images, and the thumbnails are available in just a few seconds. Like iPhoto, there is a slider to quickly adjust the size of the thumbnails.

There are a ton of sort options, including name, date (mod, created, or EXIF taken), megapixels, image height or width, file size, kind, resolution, and more. Any sort can be done in ascending or descending order.

Textures with transparency display correctly. Other image browsers I've tried either showed a corrupted image or subsituted a color for the transparency instead of letting the background show through. (Even iPhoto doesn't display transparency in thumbnails.) You can also opt to have the images cast a shadow, and the shadow correctly follows the edges of the transparency... a huge help when an image closely matches the browser's background color.

The background color can be changed to suit your needs. Different colors can be used for the thumbnail browser, the image view, and slideshows.

You can select what text information displays below the thumbnail, including name, dimensions, file size, date, kind, and more. The font can be adjusted to suit your needs.

    Hotkeys for easy keyboard navigation.

Easy to view individual images. Double-click to open image in a separate window, or in a separate image viewer of your choice. There is also a full-screen image viewer and a slideshow option.

And best of all, the developer is very responsive. There was a sort option I wanted that wasn't available, and he issued an update with it the day after I made the suggestion.

"I so wish this was still in development"

    Summary

This was a great product that seems to have been left to die. Two years later I still haven't seen anything better, and it's a shame the developer is MIA.
