    "'tis crap, Laddie."

    May 3, 2005  |   By hoyd

    Version: forty-two 1.6.2

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I've watched this app for awhile, hoping it would mature, and just gave it a serious try again. It does have the problems mentioned by other reviewers (won't accept a video_ts folder), despite condescending remarks by shills who tell us to look for imaginary spaces in file paths.
Been at this long enough to know crap when I see it. No more time to waste.
Obviously developers want to sell their shareware versions, but the freeware version doesn't inspire confidence.

It's been almost a year since anyone could download this product, if ever. This software does not exist and should be removed from this site.

    "Works perfectly."

    December 30, 2004  |   By osiris24x--2008

    Version: forty-two 1.6.2

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I can't speak for the people who are getting errors, and claiming this program does nothing. I can say however, that it installed and works, perfectly. I followed the manual, installed it, and am now ripping a copy of the movie "Antitrust" as a test.

I can't speak for the speed as I haven't used many other ripping apps, but I can say that it's a very straight forward application, that does precisely what it says it will. A nice touch is that it offers a "1 CD" option which essentially tries its best to get the absolute best quality balance, while still fitting the resulting Divx file, onto a standard 700 MB CD-R.

My only complaint with this product, is a minor one. It asks you which track on the disc you'd like to rip and compress, but it doesn't give you a clue as to which track is which. I had to open another app, Handbrake, to find out the track information.

All in all, an *excellent* little program.

    "Excellent App!"

    January 27, 2004  |   By robotspacer

    Version: forty-two 1.6.2

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
While it does take a little bit of setup, and there are some things to watch out for, if you read the included (very short and simple) manual, it's quite easy and only takes a few minutes. From there on it's just as simple to use. One huge advantage forty-two has over other similar apps is that it can encode a subtitle track along with the video... an absolute must for some DVDs! It does take some time for it to do its job, but that's true of any app like this, and the excellent quality output is worth the wait.

While I don't care much about a time estimate, an overall progress meter would be about my only request for a future version. For at least half of the time all that shown was an indeterminate meter and a display of how many minutes had been transcoded. If it knows how many minutes are completed and how many minutes there are total, it should be simple to show a progress bar. This is only a minor complaint however.

    Overall, forty-two is highly recommended.

"Too bad the 1CD option can't replace VCD on DVD..."

    October 28, 2003  |   By roobieroo

    Version: forty-two 1.6.2

    Summary

    ...players
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
So far I've only tried the (1 CD) option and VCD and it worked for both. The (1 CD) took about eleven hours to encode 112 minutes but when played back at full screen with the VLC player it looked fantastic. I couldn't believe that the final output size was only 650mb! VCD sucks. I'm not knocking forty-two for this but I fail to see why anyone would ever use VCD at all. At full screen it looks horrible and the file size for 2 hours of video was nearly one gigabyte. It encoded faster than the (1 CD) but why bother with VCD. I can't get any of the audio previews to play when selecting which track to encode but other than that it works great.
