Download Picks highlight the best all-around software on Download.com

A new award for the cream-of-the-crop software on Download.com lets you know which apps editors and users have rated the best in their respective categories.

Today, Download.com is proud to announce its inaugural Download Picks. These software titles are applications in our four major platforms--Windows, Mac OS X, Android, and iOS--that have been identified as the best and most trusted applications on our site.

Programs that receive the distinction of being a Download Pick are selected based on the following criteria: high editorial rating; high user rating; popularity (download count); publisher support (is the software regularly updated and is the publisher responsive to users and developers?); historical performance; and unique features or "best in its class" status.

There is no automatic algorithm for becoming a Download Pick. All of the software selections were made by humans using the above criteria, but the lists are neither comprehensive nor exhaustive. We will continue to add "Download Pick" status to worthy products in the coming months and years.

For now, the only indication of "Download Pick" status on the Download.com site will be the award image located on the software's product pages on Download.com, but we will continue to incorporate the "Download Pick" data into the other aspects of the site, including search results, search filters, category and listings page data, RSS feeds, and the Download.com App.

What do you think? Are there any obvious products we missed? Any ridiculous products that shouldn't be honored? Let us know in the comments, or better yet, write good reviews for the products you love that didn't make the first cut. Here's the full list of the inaugural Download Picks:
