"still good just have to look hard for the op out button"

    December 27, 2013  |   By victorpc

    Version: ZoneAlarm 12.0.118

    Pros

works well for free has some faults

    Cons

There's a gaping backdoor with the product with respect to the Application Control Settings. The process "Host Process for Windows Services" is a shared component made by Microsoft and many programs can use this to access the internet. zonealarm does not handle well

    Summary

when at the install spy bars at the bottom left corner in a slightly lighter color to background the words "skip all offers" click on and processed this may change if to many catch on

"Good Firewall but poor application control"

    December 12, 2013  |   By arobertson1

    Version: ZoneAlarm 120.104

    Pros

I've used ZoneAlarm free for many years and it is very good program for blocking intrusive attempts to access your computer. It has many settings depending on your ability and advises you when something is trying to do something suspicious. It works well with other antivirus products (providing you use the firewall only) or it can be used with Checkpoint's antivirus as well.

    Cons

There's a gaping backdoor with the product with respect to the Application Control Settings. The process "Host Process for Windows Services" is a shared component made by Microsoft and many programs can use this to access the internet. The problem is ZoneAlarm is unable to discern between a legitimate process such as Firefox or whether it is a piece of malware using the process. There is more information here:

    https://www.zonealarm.com/forums/showthread.php/80374-Corel-pop-up-and-connection-not-blocked-by-ZAFree

    Summary

On the whole it's better than the Windows firewall but there are serious issues that Checkpoint need to address with regard to application control.

"Do NOT install! AVOID THIS VERSION !!!"

    November 29, 2013  |   By dragon789wv

    Version: ZoneAlarm 120.104

    Pros

NONE!!!! NONE!!!! and did I say NONE (?), unless you think this is better than nothing and very desperate for something.
I'm still running older versions of ZoneAlarm on my other 2 PCs. This new version is something to avoid, as it is sneaky and doesn't allow you to bypass all the junk stuff that they want you to install.

    Cons

I have 3 Windows computers, one of which is a laptop, all of which had been running ZA and I was very happy with it. I then installed this latest version of ZA on the laptop - as part of normal maintenance and upgrade, was distracted and wound up using their "default" installion - BAD MISTAKE. I then had a hard time backing everything out and eventually, with great effort, managed to do so. I then attempted to reinstall ZA again, and this time picking the Custom installation. I could NOT get pass their 'option' of NOT installing their Search toolbar program and other make their webpage the default webpage. I just could not bypass by unclicking these options, as ZA then informed me that I MUST install them. At this point, I pulled the plug on installation.
This product has gone completely downhill with crap like this. Why they do it is beyond me.

    Summary

AVOID THIS VERSION !!! Perhaps I will try it again in a few months, but check to see if it's changed its installation procedures.

    "It is what it is..."

    November 24, 2013  |   By TrakerJon

    Version: ZoneAlarm 120.104

    Pros

Offers basic software firewall protection slightly better than Windows Firewall. The free version is still available, you don't have to pay to play. I've used it for years with only a few issues (usually with antivirus programs like Avast! on Vista).

    Cons

Watch the install windows closely and you can avoid tool bars and free trials of the pro version by choosing "skip all offers"...they're a bit sneaky about this. Don't install the latest and greatest when prompted by the program, wait a few weeks until the work bugs out.

    Summary

It's easy to use and does a good job of monitoring unknown or unwanted traffic. There may be better products out there for free but typically you'll have to be a little more tech savvy to use them.

"Forces you to download search/toolbar AGAIN!"

    November 9, 2013  |   By glitterninja

    Version: ZoneAlarm 120.104

    Pros

The previous version, once fixed, worked well.

    Cons

This version is doing the same thing the previous version did: Not allow a custom install, thus forcing you to download their toolbar and search engine. Lots of reports of nagging for payment after a few days or weeks, too, but I immediately went back to the prior version so I haven't seen that (yet).

    Summary

I am only using ZoneAlarm because there is literally nothing else that will work without bloating my computer. My husband uses it on his old WinXP box for firewall and antivirus. We used to love this program, even bought the pro version about four years ago for my previous computer, but lately it has been a huge pain. My first problem with ZA was last year, when I asked on their help forums about a bizarre pop-up that was misspelled and looked fake. The ZA moderators tried to make fun of me, calling me stupid and paranoid, until I said that a lot of viruses use fake-looking popups with misspelled words and a firewall should probably be more careful to make itself NOT look like a virus. At that point, my entire thread was deleted, and I saw another thread with the same question also disappear. But since then, there have been no pop-ups like that, so I thought that meant ZA learned from their mistakes. Now, I'm not so sure. See, last year the last major ZA update, there was a huge issue with the download screen not offering a custom install option, meaning we had to download the toolbar etc. or else we couldn't update our firewall. When I contacted them via help chat, I was told all I could do is download as is and then manually uninstall the toolbar, etc. The good thing is that a few weeks later, after tons of complaints, they added a custom install option so you could bypass the unnecessary bloatware, and I hope that happens here. I'm being completely honest when I say we would purchase ZA pro firewall for both our computers IF they showed some integrity with their free product, like they used to. Now I just don't trust to pay them $29.95, given how they have acted with the free firewall.

"I have it out of lack of options."

    November 8, 2013  |   By Son_of_Earth

    Version: ZoneAlarm 120.104

    Pros

    Better than windows default firewall.
    Inbound and outbound control.

    Cons

    -No offline installer.
-New version has serious issues with install that leads to bsod and endless repeating install process that comes over and over again after each restart.
-Advanced options window can only be resized to a certain extend, making it annoying to look at.
-The default settings are set to automaticly allow everything and not ask.
-Forced homepage change or search provider.

    Summary

The install lead to bsod, after restart the program was installed but the installer download process still came up as if it still was not installed, even a cancellation wouldn't stop this endless cycle so after a restart I had to stop the process manually with taskmanager and opened the file location of the "resume zonealarm install" icon on the desktop and deleted everything. The cycle stopped. Checkpoint is getting sloppy. PROVIDE AN OFFLINE INSTALLER! At least an installer with windows 7, 64bit compatibility.
