"I have it out of lack of options."

    November 8, 2013  |   By Son_of_Earth

    Version: ZoneAlarm 120.104

    Pros

    Better than windows default firewall.
    Inbound and outbound control.

    Cons

    -No offline installer.
-New version has serious issues with install that leads to bsod and endless repeating install process that comes over and over again after each restart.
-Advanced options window can only be resized to a certain extend, making it annoying to look at.
-The default settings are set to automaticly allow everything and not ask.
-Forced homepage change or search provider.

    Summary

The install lead to bsod, after restart the program was installed but the installer download process still came up as if it still was not installed, even a cancellation wouldn't stop this endless cycle so after a restart I had to stop the process manually with taskmanager and opened the file location of the "resume zonealarm install" icon on the desktop and deleted everything. The cycle stopped. Checkpoint is getting sloppy. PROVIDE AN OFFLINE INSTALLER! At least an installer with windows 7, 64bit compatibility.

"Stay away from these people! They play fast-and-loose."

    November 4, 2013  |   By Snerdly-Fackle

    Version: ZoneAlarm 120.104

    Pros

    None. Not a one.

    Cons

Pay them real quick, they say. Then, watch your monitor in a month or so for screeching, screaming, dire warnings that your "subscription" has expired and your computer will be attacked by flesh-eating rutabagas from two galaxies away if you don't renew.

Watch your Zone Alarm warnings while they tell you that you're not covered, and "vulnerable." But: try to contact them? In any (that's, all in caps "any") way. Forget it. They hide behind layers, drop-down menus, and circular-directing radio buttons like a bunch of little sand-box brats. They're absolutely terrible. Just terrible.

    Summary

You're better off with Norton or MacAfee or Auntie Maud's computer protection and pickle-canning company.

    "Excellent firewall, user-friendly."

    November 3, 2013  |   By Mad Katt

    Version: ZoneAlarm 110.768.000

    Pros

Easy to use, blocks hijacks without blocking most of the programs I want to use. Learns, and software updates keep that information (or at least it used to). I have tried a number of other free firewalls and have yet to find one that works as well or that I like as much.

    Cons

Very annoying insistence on installing the ZoneAlarm Toolbar...
(FYI, if you DO get saddled with the toolbar, try using Advanced Uninstaller Pro--I have used it in the past to successfully remove a number of unwanted toolbars and other "offers". Available free from download.com--although it also comes with a number of "offers" you need to avoid, some of them are extremely hard to remove.)

    Summary

Very good firewall as long as you a) do a custom install and b) click on "Skip all offers". When I did this I got JUST the firewall without either the unwanted Antivirus or the equally unwanted toolbar.
Warning, both options are very small, blue on blue, and as inconspicuous as possible. Just keep looking 'til you find them!

    Updated on Nov 3, 2013

Downloading from their website won't help (I tried that too.)
First you have to opt for custom rather than express install
Then you have to click skip all offers.
Both options are small, blue on blue, & hard to find.

"Free? Not when I downloaded it"

    October 19, 2013  |   By cautionflag1956

    Version: ZoneAlarm 110.768.000

    Pros

It downloads the product it won't allow you to use quickly and smoothly

    Cons

Download says free, but when finished loading, informs me that I have to pay

    Summary

Just downloaded it, let it install following the recommendations above to skip the bloated items that download with it. After it installs, it informs me my license has expired and is willing to sell me zone alarm. I'm not sure where the free comes from since I will have to pay, so I am moving on to find another product that is as advertised

    "Netbook Users Don't Install It!"

    October 17, 2013  |   By davefarkus

    Version: ZoneAlarm 9.2.106

    Pros

    None for me.

    Cons

Freezes your Netbook to the point that you almost CANNOT use it. I have a minimum of 8 hours so far trying to uninstall it but can't even do that. Takes forever to boot, forever to shut down and forever for it to accept ANY mouse or keyboard input. Forever to boot to Safe Mode. Awful mess.

    Summary

That said, I know people who have desktop PC's and it's working very nicely so for me it was just a Netbook issue.

"No freeware hassles if u click "Skip all offers""

    October 14, 2013  |   By Anu_kailash

    Version: ZoneAlarm 110.768.000

    Pros

Excellent firewall. Have used it for years.
Recently while trying to install the latest version on my parent's PC, I was initially irritated to find that some other toolbar etc is being forced on me, so I cancelled the installation. Later I figured out how to skip the extra freeware. I see many users complaining about the freeware, hence this review. There is a tiny link at the bottom of the installation window which says "Skip all offers". On clicking that you can install ZA without any problems.

    Cons

    None at all

    Summary

It would be good to have "Skip all offers" link in a more prominent way. Many users are misled into thinking that they have no choice but to accept the freewares. The CNET user rating seems to be affected by this one point for this popular firewall.

    Click Custom Install
Clear the boxes for the options you want to disable.

    "Very good free firewall"

    September 6, 2013  |   By fearlessscientist

    Version: ZoneAlarm 110.768.000

    Pros

    Strong inbound and outbound control
    Stealths all ports
    Lightweight

    Cons

    Nothing so far

    Summary

After reading many forums I try different firewalls like Comodo and OA, but I keep coming back to ZA for its sheer simplicity. Like this product. You can easily skip the toolbar and home page highjack. Pay attention while installation.

"Forced trash-ware installs, so I did not use it"

    August 23, 2013  |   By RHinCT

    Version: ZoneAlarm 110.768.000

    Pros

I have used Zone Alarm's free firewall (but none of the rest of the Zone Alarm collection) for years and been happy with its performance. I have no doubt that the firewall continues to give exemplary results.

    Cons

In order to install the latest edition of Zone Alarm's free firewall the install process required that I agree to having trashy, intrusive garbage-ware installed to disrupt my work. Sorry, that simply is not going to happen. So after years of satisfied use I will get along without Zone Alarm.

    Summary

To be fair, in all the years I have been using Zone Alarm's free firewall they have not received any payment from me at all. That sort of thing happens when something is free. My suggestions to several businesses that they should consider the paid version of the Zone Alarm firewall is the extent of my reciprocity for its use. They are perfectly within their rights to set rules about what non-monetary price the unpaid users of their "free" software must be subjected to. And their users are within their own rights to find that too high a price, as I have.
