"I've been a fan for years, but now they've stuffed it!"

    July 9, 2015  |   By c_ili7

    Version: ZoneAlarm 133.209

    Pros

    - Umm... used to be good?

    Cons

    - Forces search and toolbar install (will not install without you agreeing to bloatware).

    Summary

Whoever made the decision to change install requirements at ZoneAlarm should be fired. They are going to lose A LOT of marketshare on this silly decision. I've sung nothing but praise for this product for years, and even I as a loyal user have changed tact. Good luck getting those 'trying' ZoneAlarm for the first time to commit with these types of permission requirements. Bye!!!

    "Incredible SPAM"

    July 3, 2015  |   By Peter Andro

    Version: ZoneAlarm 133.209

    Pros

In the present SPAM condition: NOTHING!

    Cons

It imposes itself on your Firefox "new tab" in very annoying blinking advertizes and impossible to get rid of it, even when you uninstall ZoneAlarm, even when you uninstall/reinstall Firefox

"Latest update made ZA very BAD"

    March 7, 2015  |   By multi-timm

    Version: ZoneAlarm 133.052

    Pros

    it alledgedly improves windows security

    Cons

After the latest update, applications started hanging, crashing, failing.
things that should simply work, like a browser, started becoming unreliable.
    (Iron, Chrome, Firefox, Maxthon)

    Summary

I thought firewall software is supposed to be on your side, helping you get rid of unwanted spyware and toolbars (that fall into this category), but now, you can't get zonealarm without a spy toolbar!
After installing this latest version, things stopped working. Maxthon was hanging and crashing, Iron & Chrome started stalling, Firefox started hanging.
I'm uninstalling this, and going back to Windows' built-in firewall and taking a closer look at TinyWall and PersonalFirewall, and maybe the Ashampoo Firewall... all good alternate choices. I've tried Comodo in the past but it seemed rather resource-hungry.

Works well on Windows 8.1 and no compatibilty issues with Windows Defender.

    Cons

The "Privacy Toolbar" feature doesn't support Chrome.

    Summary

    Updated on Mar 23, 2015

"Can Prevent Network Printing W/O Warning"

    January 28, 2015  |   By ermannacio

    Version: ZoneAlarm 133.052

    Pros

    Seems adequate in its detection

    Cons

Can block local network requests, even on a home network, and won't say it did. This means you may suddenly lose the ability to print and not know why. This is a serious trap that may frustrate MANY users.

    Summary

Support or replies to this issue have been non-existent. Do you expect support for a free version? Perhaps not but if it blocks normal activity without warning they had better know. This is simply unacceptable.

"Great, If You Can Handle A Speed Reduction"

    January 1, 2015  |   By jasonp82

    Version: ZoneAlarm 133.052

    Pros

    Great features
    Few popup notifications
    Blocks most intrustions
    Trusted by many
It's been around a long time...

    Cons

Internet browsing speed reduction (Very noticeable)

    Summary

After using PC Tools for years, I switched to Comodo's free firewall, and used it for years. I never had any issues with Comodo, and it worked great. Unfortunately, when I upgraded to Win 7, the program would not install correctly and you would wind up in a restart loop which I couldn't fix despite trying many recommended solutions. So it was time to give Zone Alarm another try, as I hadn't in many years.

Zone alarm was easy to install, has a built in list of programs that are generally safe to use (Such as web browsers), so you will receive few popup notifications. Most of the time you don't even know it's down there monitoring, and it seems to be pretty effective. However, I noticed one huge drawback..

After installing (and uninstalling, reinstalling, etc) I noticed a huge performance hit in my internet browsing speed. I was constantly in my task manager trying to see what was going on. The performance hit was not only on my Internet, but with my computer as well. Music would start lagging/skipping, and opening a few tabs in Chrome, for example, would cause an immense amount of memory to be used. The mouse cursor would be sluggish... Through trial and error, I realized it was indeed Zone Alarm.. which is a shame. I would have used it if not for this.

Despite it being a pretty good firewall, especially for the price ($0), I had to uninstall it for good and try another free one. I'm currently exploring PrivateFirewall, which I also downloaded here. So far so good. It's nice to be able to browse with some speed again.

Perhaps this wouldn't be an issue on a brand new computer, though I have a quad core processor with 4GB ram. I don't have any memory/speed issues unless Zonealarm is installed...

"First install of all-in-one free suite and it wants $50"

    September 11, 2014  |   By jcadbiz

    Version: ZoneAlarm 133.052

    Pros

ONLY Deceptive - which is better than being murdered or something.

    Cons

Criminal behavior - fraudulent. PSYCHOPATHIC BUSINESS MODEL TRIES TO FORCE YOU TO BUY UPGRADE AFTER INSTALLING FREE PRODUCT. THIS MAY BE A NEW "IDEA." BET THEY GET BUSTED FOR IT!

    Summary

Dark side element counts on having you install a deep program (roots into the pre-boot pre-windows) of a free product so that you have "bought into" the program (worried you can't / don't want to have to uninstall it. Not to mention 200MB VC++ library download that it installed from MS) Now they simply try and make you pay for a different "product." Psychopathic!
    GO TO HELL.
