"So glad I switched to ZA with antivirus"

    January 7, 2005  |   By Mari

    Version: ZoneAlarm with Antivirus 5.5.062.004

    Summary

I've been switching over all the computers on my homenetwork from Norton to ZA wAntivirus as each subscription to Norton runs out... What a relief, my computers run better without Norton hogging all the resources and the way ZoneAlarm handles incoming email viruses is not intrusive the way Norton is.

    "Buggy"

    January 4, 2005  |

    Version: ZoneAlarm with Antivirus 5.5.062.004

    Summary

When installed on my Win98 system, I get the "blue screen of death". Further investigation of the error (VSDATA95) showed that it was a ZoneAlarm compatibility problem.

    "Needs more work!"

    December 19, 2004  |

    Version: ZoneAlarm with Antivirus 5.5.062.004

    Summary

As a graduate school "for fun" project, we tested this version and found the antivirus by Computer Associates to be lacking. It failed to detect several variants of "Backdoor" Trojan series. Various infected files were deliberately downloaded on a freshly installed P4, 512ram, Xp machine with all software (including the antivirus) up to date. Only the firewall prevented and notified us that the trojans were attempting to "phone home". The "auto-protect/real-time" protection and several manual scans failed to detect these trojans. The firewall is getting better, however I still believe you are better off with version 4.5 because of stability problems. The antivirus needs more work! It was also suprising to find out that the free versions of AVG and Avast detected all of our files. For now, choose one of the free versions of antivirus and install a free firewall other than ZoneAlarm. Although this firewall works extremely well, it does not "play along nicely with others" anymore.
