"WAS A GOOD SUITE, NOT NOW."

    March 18, 2015  |   By QuentinTarantino

    Version: ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus+Firewall 133.052

    Pros

    Great security.
    Set and forget.
    Does the job well, but................................

    Cons

For months I have been having issues with my laptop getting sluggish, I mean some pages taking an age to open. Tried a re install of my Malwarebytes, updated Shockwave player ,Adobe reader etc etc etc.
Little did I know it was ZoneAlarm, besides the high CPU use, it was the culprit for slowing down my laptop. I uninstalled it, went back to Comodo. My laptop is fast again. I never thought for once it would be Zone Alarm.(CheckPoint)

    Summary

Good all round security, but made my laptop crawl.

"New edition is VERY problematic, adds spy toolbar"

    March 7, 2015  |   By multi-timm

    Version: ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus+Firewall 133.052

    Pros

ZoneAlarm was the safe go-to free of charge choice for increasing windows security.
But with the changes, they are becoming more and more permissive into having it approach adware status, although it's in a grey zone and doesn't quite cross that fine line.

    Cons

    Forced Toolbar installation.
Browsers start hanging and/or crashing after this latest install.

    Summary

I thought firewall software is supposed to be on your side, helping you get rid of unwanted spyware and toolbars (that fall into this category), but now, you can't get zonealarm without a spy toolbar!
After installing this latest version, things stopped working. Maxthon was hanging and crashing, Iron & Chrome started stalling, Firefox started hanging.
I'm uninstalling this, and going back to Windows' built-in firewall and taking a closer look at TinyWall and PersonalFirewall, and maybe the Ashampoo Firewall... all good alternate choices. I've tried Comodo in the past but it seemed rather resource-hungry.

    "Trusted, but some performance issues"

    February 12, 2015  |   By kevinwc11

    Version: ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus+Firewall 133.052

    Pros

We installed it on two of our XP machines when MS stopped supporting Security Essentials for XP. The changeover went well, and security seemed very good.
Didn't seem to be too intrusive...
Probably better on a faster PC

    Cons

Overall system perfomance seemed to decrease some, but it was tollerable.
My main problem with ZoneAlarm was their removable media scans slowed progress to a crawl when using CDs or Floppy disks.

    Summary

I would rate it as "above average".

"Some difficulties lately so I replaced it with AVAST"

    January 25, 2015  |   By kaycey

    Version: ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus+Firewall 133.052

    Pros

ZoneAlarm had been my trusted anti virus and firewall for years. It is always working in the background non-intrusively.

    Cons

However nowadays I need to manually update the anti virus. Lately when I do that the update fails to download. I tried it for several days but without success.

Also a default setting in its firewall for trusted local network was set to high or medium. This caused a shared printer to be unavailable. It took me days of tweaking before I found out this default setting in ZoneAlarm was causing the problem.

Since it is a trusted local network the default setting should be minimal or none. The Windows settings - which is of course can be confusing - should do. Users just got to be careful not to share via Windows a file path to "Everyone" if you are going to use the laptop in a public area. Very risky to do that.

Because of these issues I decided to uninstall ZoneAlarm but without success. I had to download and run a new installation. After that I was able to uninstall it.

    Summary

I have replaced ZoneAlarm with Avast. Hope the latter will work better.

    Updated on Feb 1, 2015

The recent version of ZoneAlarm caused my old HP laptop running on XP to keep rebooting. At first I thought it was hardware failure; then I found a program VSMON.EXE running in Task Manager taking up 300,000 Kb of memory. I found out that VSMON.EXE is a ZoneAlarm program and it is considered a threat by some reviewers.

After uninstalling ZoneAlarm, my old faithful laptop continues to work without any problem.

As for Avast which I have tried on a new laptop, it is too intrusive, marking a safe exe file from a printer driver as a virus. When you download an exe file from the Internet, it also blocks it without giving you a choice.

Now I use Panda anti-virus. Hope to report on this one. Reviews like this should help developers improve on their software.

"Zonealarm will rescue you when other products fail."

    January 10, 2015  |   By kennygo2

    Version: ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus+Firewall 133.052

    Pros

About 10 years ago I liked Norton Internet Security Suite to protect my internet experience. After reviewing heavily products to use I decided on Norton as many people did. About 5 months into using Norton a bubble message popped up saying it found a virus. I thought "Oh good it caught it", however 2 seconds later the program hanged. My computer and internet still functioned but my internet suite was completely disabled. I did not want to reboot while a virus further imbedded itself in my software so I downloaded a free version of Zonealarm which I remembered reviewing. Within seconds of installing Zonealarm it pointed out the virus to me and eliminated it completely. I have been using Zonealarm's Internet Security Suite ever since.

    Cons

Zonealarm can get technical is what causes some bad reviews.

    Summary

If you are unconvinced try Ultimate 7 Suite for a week, then install Zonealarm and watch everything Ultimate missed in just a week.

    "***SPYWARE ALERT***"

    December 18, 2014  |   By Paulleewogg

    Version: ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus+Firewall 133.052

    Pros

None. I did not get to test this out as I refused to let ZoneAlarm hijack my homepage or search engine, which is MANDATORY if you wish to install it

    Cons

This software requires you relinquish your preferred search engine and homepage to whatever ZoneAlarm wishes you to have. This strikes me as something an antivirus should be protecting against, not promoting. I did not click on "Quick Install" as I prefer to read what exactly it is that someone else wishes me to get into. When you click on "custom install", you get to see that they wish to hijack your computer in order to give you supposedly free antivirus that's supposed to stop entities other than yourself from hijacking your computer. Seems like a very Orwellian piece of software (aka, POS)

    Summary

Any program that wishes to take control of my home page and preferred search engine is spyware/malware, IMHO. As such, I would advise readers to continue on to another free antivirus. I would also advise DO NOT CLICK ON "QUICK iNSTALL" !!! Read what your getting into. Click on "CUSTOM INSTALL", if you must.

    "incompatible"

    September 25, 2014  |   By danakabradpitt

    Version: ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus+Firewall 133.052

    Pros

    I cannot think of any.

    Cons

I am running windows 8.1 and when I tried to install the paid firewall standalone , it was so incompatible with anything else I had to get it off as quick as I could. That just tells me there is a bit of issues with these guys.

"First install of all-in-one free suite and it wants $50"

    September 11, 2014  |   By jcadbiz

    Version: ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus+Firewall 133.052

    Pros

Deceptive - which is better than being murdered or something.

    Cons

Criminal behavior - fraudulent. PSYCHOPATHIC BUSINESS MODEL TRIES TO FORCE YOU TO BUY UPGRADE AFTER INSTALLING FREE PRODUCT. THIS MAY BE A NEW "IDEA." BET THEY GET BUSTED FOR IT!

    Summary

Dark side element counts on having you install a deep program (roots into the pre-boot pre-windows) of a free product so that you have "bought into" the program (worried you can't / don't want to have to uninstall it. Not to mention 200MB VC++ library download that it installed from MS) Now they simply try and make you pay for a different "product." Psychopathic!
    GO TO HELL.
