Version: ZoneAlarm Firewall (Windows 2000/XP) 6.5.722
"1475 intrusions blocked, 8 high rated, get it? A real must."
Pros: This program not only will show you how many intrusions were blocked but rate them and provide you with the utmost control of who, what, when and where your computer is being accessed. I have found the quote on quote annoying pop-ups providing verification for programs very informative and you can also customize what and how many notifications you will see. You'll also find an exact list of programs that are accessing the computer and what zones they are accessing such as intranets or internet zones AND you can specifically configure what programs correspond to specific zones. You can delete a program from the list that is no longer on your computer and the most important quality of this firewall is its effectiveness. If you are paranoid about spyware on your computer that you just cannot detect or remove, it won't be able to acess the internet without your approval once you've installed this firewall. I installed this firewall on my friends computer and his performance sky-rocketed! I have not noticed any degradation in performance and with Netzero 3G the dial-up is not slowed or compromised. Ultimately, this program is a must for the anyone concerned about security. Antivirus/spyware protection is not enough, this solid firewall will add the extra punch against the malicious. Add to your watch list, this one is free, free, free!! Just be ready for a real eye opener compared to Micro-SOFTY firewall to this wonder of a tool. Oh, I forgot to mention, these developers address any problems ultrafast. This may be a little frustrating but assess how much the next release fixes and if you're being affected that you must endure the dial up download times. Regardless, worth the download by all means.

"Hard to believe Download.com reviewed the latest version"
Pros: It is a good company
Cons: There is no doubt Zone alarm is trying ehance their product. However, in doing so they have managed to take away one of their strengths and that is Zone alarm working silently in the back ground. No more. It has become an annoying software that would confuse the average user. Worse, if a novice doesn't understand what Zone Alarm is trying to do, they will block something they should not. The next time they go to load the blocked software, it won't load and they will wonder why.
Download review seems to be the same review as before the new version. It doesn't even mention this new feature in the review. Consequently, it seems download.com is going on zone alarms past reputation and didn't bother reviewing the latest changes.
All in all, if these new features added more portection the annoyance would be welcomed, but it doesn't. I still get as much spyware and trojans as before. Granted, Zone Alarm blocks most of them, but not all. For the novice, you will block something essential if you are not careful about selecting yes or no when asked if you want to let a feature to be used (i.e. mouse movement). What is scary about this is zone alarm popus up in red with the word danger. Obviously if you say no and and disabled the keyboard, mouse or the software from loading at all because the warning scares the sh.. out of you, than you have just disabled a program you may need to use.
Zone alarm...the days from being a worry free solution to protecting our system has gone. You took a step backwards in your update.

Version: ZoneAlarm Firewall (Windows 2000/XP) 7.0
"Somewhat disappointed with version 7"
Pros: It's free and it protects well. It's made by zonelabs so you know you're getting great protection.
Cons: I'm disappointed with version 7. It seems that zonelabs added more bloat and less protection to the product. It also had some install issues. My advice is wait until the bugs are worked out of version 7 and then download it.

"Quick upgrade from last release--works well still"
Pros: Is very easy to use, and does it's job. Seems like a quick fix and the notes say it was due to a bug with CPU usage being excessive. I never experienced it on it.
Cons: Antivirus monitoring isn't free, however even when it was AVG Antivirus isn't detected. AVG is good enough and by golly 30 million users worldwide demands it be detectable with ZA.
