We've played a lot of time management games, and many of them are variations on the same theme: servers rushing around restaurants trying to keep all of their customers satisfied, or farmers trying to raise and sell produce to save the family homestead. Youda Marina offers a new approach to this genre. Part time management, part empire building, the game's challenging premise makes for an entertaining--if sometimes frustrating--playing experience.
The premise behind Youda Marina is that users must create and manage a marina that is attractive to passing boat traffic. Players start with the basics: a radio station for communication, docks, and lighthouses. As boats dock at the marina, the player earns money, which is then reinvested to make the marina more attractive to boaters. Users might start with a bar or gas station and eventually start building resorts, amusement parks, and public services, turning a humble marina into a full-fledged town. The trick, of course, is to know what will draw in boat traffic; we found the game maddening at times as we futilely added light houses, dock lights, and extra docks, only to have boat after boat pass by without docking. The game is easy to play--a tutorial walks beginners through all of the functions--but difficult to master. We place this among the more unique and challenging games we've seen, and we think it's a great choice for any user old enough to have some critical thinking skills and the ability to strategize.
