Version: Yahoo! SiteBuilder 2.1.1
"Table and Reinstallation Bugs. Poor Customer Suppot."
Summary: I've been redesigning my small business website for the past several months with SiteBuilder 2.0. I upgraded to SiteBuilder 2.1 yesterday. It ran fine until I noticed that this version has some serious bugs. Yahoo small business customer support is lame. IÂ?ve been paying yahoo $19.99 a month to host my site for the past year. This includes free support. Well, I found out that support is Â?customerÂ? and not Â?technicalÂ? support. Two service reps could not help me. I even recreated the bugs with one rep. My problem now is that my site is almost completed, and these new bugs will cause me countless hours and months to redesign my site with Microsoft Frontpage. All my IT friends warned me that I should use FrontPage because it was more stable. I went with yahoo and Sitebuilder because of the Yahoo name and reputation. With future growth, I hoped to incorporate yahooÂ?s merchant solution and web sales into my site. I have backups of my site and know how to reinstall the previous version of Sitebuilder. But looking ahead with business foresight, how will Yahoo customer support help me when I need more Â?technical supportÂ? with a larger website, more traffic and sales? IÂ?ll transfer my domain name and my site to another company like Registerfly where IÂ?ll have twice the storage and transfer space for the same price. I sure hope the customer service is better. I browsed around some of the Yahoo Sitebuilder user groups and saw a few error postings, but I really donÂ?t have the time to search for answers in user groups when I paid Yahoo $240 over the past year for Â?freeÂ? support. IÂ?ve explained the version bugs below:
Table properties were displaying incorrectly when previewed with web browsers (AOL and Internet Explore). When table properties are set to Â?invisibleÂ?, the borders still show up. Also, no matter what color you set the cell border color, the right and bottom margins of the table shows up as a black font color. Another reason I know itÂ?s a new version bug: previous tables created in 2.0 are invisible.
Ok, so IÂ?m computer savvy enough to uninstall version 2.1 and reinstall version 2.0. (removed all registry entries and application data, etc) I was in for another Â?bug surprise. I got a Â?serious program error,Â? which I then forwarded to yahoo. I was able to launch the program but got the same table errors. It appears that once you open a site created in version 2.0 and save it with version 2.1, and then try to open it again with version 2.0, the program will hang, and youÂ?ll have the same table display bugs.
Yahoo boasts 24 hours customer support (including phone). So I contacted customer service via email, I explained the table bugs, reinstallation errors, and I forwarded the serious program report. I received a condescending reply from a yahoo small business tech: Â?Please ensure that "Active Scripting","Allow paste operations via script", and "Scripting of Java applets" are all set to "Enable"Â? Â?If you are having trouble launching SiteBuilder and have had no trouble in the past, these issues you are encountering may also be caused by spyware. You may want to try downloading a spyware removal tool to remove these intrusive files from your computer.Â?
What???? The tech failed to assist me in the first problem which is the table bugs in version 2.1. All he focused on is on reinstalling version 2.0. YES, active scripting Â?Allow paste operations via script", and "Scripting of Java applets" are all set to "Enable." YES, my computer is running the spyware removal programs Â?Spysweeper,Â? and Â?SpybotÂ? plus Zone Alarm anti-virus and firewall.
I called and spoke to a second rep. I created a table with him and he saw the problem, but could not help me to resolve it. Two days later, and I havenÂ?t gotten a follow up reply from Yahoo.
To make sure that my computer was not the problem, I installed it on my Â?testÂ? computer. I started a new site from scratch using a Sitebuilder template. I created a table and guess what?
YES, I got the same problem!
