"Overall good product - some hitches"

May 15, 2006  |  By jenahville

 |  Version: Yahoo Music Engine beta 1.0

Pros

Easy to search for music by artist, album, or other category. Creating your own radio station based upon your music ratings works very well and can be fine tuned easily. One is able to share their station as well.

The engine can be used as a "one-stop" mechanism. It is easy to download and/or purchase music, and fairly fast. You can download/purchase either singles or the entire album for incredibly reasonable prices. The $11.99/monthly subscription enables you to also transfer your tracks to your portable player. I have a Zen Sleek and have never had any compatibility issues. And purchasing music with that monthly subscribtion is $.79/single, and about $8.50/album [depending upon the artist].

It is easy to transfer and/or synchronize to my Zen Sleek. It is true that I do sometimes get duplicate tracks on my Zen Sleek utilizing the YME for this purpose, but the instances are negligible in my opinion.

You can use the YME to rip/burn music - although it isn't readily fast as my cd burner. But you can choose the YME for these purposes as well.

I did a lot of research before choosing my mp3 player and music subscription service. I find the music libraries to be very extensive. Relicensing tracks periodically is very smooth - although a little time consuming. And on the rare instance I have had to contact customer service, I did receive a somewhat timely response [within 24 hours].

There have been 2 updates and they do seem to be fine tuning and enhancing the software with each update.

Really good product for the price and what I use it for!! would recommend it to anyone that didn't want to be strapped into iTunes and the limited capatibility of their products and the iPod.

Cons

The software is large - bulky. It isn't as less "resource-hog" as I would like. It can be a tad buggy sometimes.

I would like to see less duplication in the transfer process.

I find the "help" pages to be too vague and not very user friendly. I would like to see Yahoo! tidy them up and expand on explanations and scenarios.

I would prefer the music to download in mp3 format instead of wma. But WMA is still more capatible than the M4u format the iTunes restricts their downloads too.

"Cant recommend this enough... for STREAMING ONLY"

January 24, 2006  |  By superman92805

 |  Version: Yahoo Music Engine beta 1.0

Pros

Great user interface, seamless integration with Yahoo Messenger, ability to share your music with your Yahoo pals! Very fun to use for Yahoo! afficianados like myself. Includes LAUNCHcast+Plus

Cons

No support for ipod. WOW major loss there. Its obvious the ipod is the market and Yahoo missed this one BIG time. Major resource hog! Unable to transfer song to ipod. Loads slowly. Oh yeah, I dont suggest subscibing... unless you wanna pay for music that you will never get to keep!

Lets go over this again.

Sure its cheap, but no ipod support!

Unable to keep your music after your subscription has ended!!!!!!!!!

Great streaming music quality!

Easy to use interface.

Yahoo messenger integration.

"My new favorite player"

October 25, 2005  |  By ax_1225

 |  Version: Yahoo Music Engine beta 1.0

Pros

I like the look and feel. You can't beat the price and the selection of music is pretty good. I have tried every media player out there and this is what I'm using now.

I can fill my 20GB device with music. Imagine doing that with purchased music on iPod. It would cost me the price of a nice car.

Cons

Sometimes navigation is slow.

Does't work with the iPods. I wouldn't buy an iPod anyway cause a gadget isn't cool if everyone has the same gadget.

"Good start but full of flaws"

October 12, 2005  |  By Insane Alice

 |  Version: Yahoo Music Engine beta 1.0

Pros

I do like the fact that the music downloads are a bit cheaper for Yahoo Unlimited users and the catalogue has much to offer but a lot more needs to be added. It makes it a bit easier to keep your songs orgranized because you can edit the tags.

Cons

The Java script errors are a pain especially if you are a unlimited access user trying to log in to access full streams. It tends to lock up my computer when I am trying to create a playlist and I do not like that it uses up a lot of RAM.

"CUSTOMERS FORCED TO DEBUG FOR YAHOO WHILE PAYING THEM, STILL BETA TO THE MAX"

September 21, 2005  |  By jasdub32

 |  Version: Yahoo Music Engine beta 1.0

Pros

Definetly its low price. Good when it works, which is about 75% of the time.

Cons

I get home after a 12hr day and feel like relaxing while listening to a little music. Yet the YahooME loads with script errors making it impossible to enjoy.

Next day... So it loads fine with no errors, which is about 75% of the time, but instead I'm getting error messages saying I am not a member and I could only sample 30 seconds worth. I'm trying to debug it by signing in and out with my password and restarting my comp, and next thing you know an hour passes to no prevail and its time to get some slumber for another day.

The last thing I need is a program that is literally filled with bugs beyond acceptability for release. And to make people actually PAAAAYYY for this? I feel like they should be paying me for reporting all their problems, which has amounted to around 20 emails to yahoo in the past month, which I get a sporadic return of 1 email per every 3 or 4 I send, and that takes 2 to 3 days. Its good when it works, but gosh its not even in BETA but an Alpha release, in my opinion. Yahoo Music Engine really pisses the living crap out of me and makes me just want to break something.

"nice looking, very slick and appealing interface--freezes ALL the time"

September 21, 2005  |  By abeburnett

 |  Version: Yahoo Music Engine beta 1.0

Pros

It has an appealing, slick interface that seems intuitive and funtional.

Cons

Well, pretty much the only thing I don't like about it is that it freezes so much that it's unusable. Literally everytime I attempt to use it I might play 1-10 songs (specifically using the Launchcast Radio aspect) and then the player bites the dust, completely freezes. That makes it pretty much useless as a music player if you ask me.

"subscription to portable device program sucks"

September 18, 2005  |  By brianmb99

 |  Version: Yahoo Music Engine beta 1.0

Pros

great price, great music selection, reasonably intuitive interface design

Cons

User interface responds sluggishly - feels like browsing the web in 1999 on a 486.

My big beef: If you want to transfer subscription songs to a portable device, go with Rhapsody or Napster, even though they cost 2.5 times as much. Yahoo Music Engine is more like an alpha version in this area. It works fine at first, but once you get lots of songs on the portable device, every time you plug it in, YME spends forever trying to figure out what's already on the device before it will let you do anything with it, and sometimes it never can even get done. Today I had to delete everything on my Zen Micro just so YME would recognize the device, then had to transfer all the new music over _and_ the music that I just deleted. YME transfers slowly too - I have USB 2.0 connection, 5 MBPS internet pipe to the house, and the YME still works really slowly. I've used Napster and Rhapsody's portable subscription models and they both rock over this crap I'm dealing with now.

Oh yeah, customer support is virtually non-existant and complaining that the subscription _does_not_work_as_advertised_ won't get your money back.

If you want to do the portable subscription thing, stay away until they put out a new major release version and these problems have been addressed.

"RIP....OFF"

August 30, 2005  |  By thesleeper

 |  Version: Yahoo Music Engine beta 1.0

Cons

It doesn't work on some computers and if you sign up for a year subscription, they steal your money, and they pretty much admit to it. Raj at Yahoo support said "Even if it doesn't work,we have billed your credit card, and there are no refunds" I have gotten a licence error on every song.Tech support had me try some things but nothing worked. If you must get this piece of crap, go month to month until you know it will work on your computer.

"Very good at times, extremely bad at others"

August 21, 2005  |  By Mahatma K

 |  Version: Yahoo Music Engine beta 1.0

Pros

Fairly easy-to-use interface. No complaints about that. Extensive library of songs to download. Pretty good afinity engine for recommending songs. The price is lower than the competition.

Cons

1. If you want to buy selected songs that you've purchased, so you can burn them to CD, you cannot just select a few and click the "buy" option. You have to buy every one individually. The only exception is for whole albums, but if you want 11 out of 12 songs from one album, you have to purchase each one separately.

2. Songs you put in a playlist don't indicate whether they're burnable (purchased). You have to go back to your entire "My Music" folder to find out which songs you've already bought.

3. Music purchased with YME cannot be moved to, and played on, another computer. YME (and Windows Media Player) on that computer won't recognize your ownership.

4. I cannot burn CDs of purchased music. Using Win XP, I can burn all kinds of data onto CDs, but not music from YME (even if purchased). I've tried everything and it's clear there's a serious flaw with YME.

5. Yahoo doesn't support their product. I wrote to the director of product management for YME, and sent several requests for help through the web "feedback" forms, but have just been ignored. Next step: Dispute the charge on my credit card when they bill me for the music I bought. Maybe that'll get some action.

Calling it a "beta" doesn't excuse Yahoo. If they're going to take money for a product, they'd better make sure it works right.

"Crap to a certain extent"

August 14, 2005  |  By CybermatriX

 |  Version: Yahoo Music Engine beta 1.0

Pros

Clean interface thats about it

Cons

Memory hog, granted I have plenty of RAM for the program but its just too much RAM it takes up. Unauthorized song ID tag modification. Example, a song title originally read as 'Love Of My Life (Brisk Remix)' will be changed to 'Love of My Life (Brisk Remix)' and the same for album titles, example, 'The Massacre' gets changed to 'Massacre, The', to me this is completely unacceptable. There's a reason why I have my songs tagged the way they are. I had to spend about 2 hours correcting the song ID tags. Hopefully Yahoo! will correct this when it get out of beta. BTW, my songs are in WMA format, so I don't know it does the same to MP3 songs.
