"Works fine for me"

March 28, 2010  |  By hmeisner

 |  Version: Yahoo! Messenger 3.0.1 beta

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I was hesitant to install the newest beta version of Messenger after reading the previous review, but decided to take a chance. I've now had several lengthy sessions using it without any crashes or problems of any kind.

It would be nice if Yahoo would inform us as to what changes have been made when putting out a new version, but that doesn't seem to be Yahoo's standard approach. Still the most important thing for me is stability and it's holding up fine in that regard for me.

"DON'T BOTHER!"

 |  Version: Yahoo! Messenger 3.0b3.126432

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Just briefly, the whole feel of the old version (2.5.3) is friendlier and quicker. The "BUZZ" feature has been added, similar to the Windows version, but you are stuck with the stock sound, unless you provide your own sounds - but not only this, you can no longer customise the existing sounds for friend coming online / message receive etc. whereas this was quickly and easily done on the old version, A step backwards.
On the old version the font appearance could be quickly changed from the dashboard, but no you have to wade thru a menu, and the change wont take effect until you sign out and back in. Another step backward.
I was hoping we were going to see some worthwhile improvements, like the incorporation of the drawing pad featured in the windows version which can be a lot of fun. Or the inclusion of audibles, and certainly the fixing of the bug which causes avatars not to be displayed correctly??

But no .. nothing wothwhile here .. Im sticking with the old version until something enticing comes along

I've been using this with 10.4.11 for a while... no probs... a little slow, which is usually cured by a restart. (I have been told it's because of the logging all the chats).

I installed 10.5.3... The ap is so slow now... after a few minutes in a chat room, the letters type in interminably slow... one... at... a ... time...

"Thank god!"

Thank god at last reasonable feature parity with the windows versions!
I got so sick of waiting i finally got some of my family to use iChat on AIM network, no mean feat where I live in asia as EVERYBODY there uses bloody Yahoo..

Anyway, its got all the bells & whistles to make a Mac user no longer a second class citizen.
Stability seems ok.

Thank God!

"Very Happy"

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I never really use Skype to call land lines, and I imagine I wouldn't with this either. It does seem strange that (if as stated below) it doesn't have audio in video chats. Maybe you need to make 2 connections to do that (one audio and one video) but that seems odd.

It's great to see Yahoo developing the software still for the Mac, and am glad that they do a really nice job with the User Interface. It always looks top notch. Beautifully presented for the Mac, and finally added the long absent voice features.

Personally, my favorite thing about Yahoo Messenger? I know it's dumb, but the smilies. MSN's stink, iChat's are pretty good, and Skype & Google are the very worst (I mean REALLY bad).

For an IM app, Yahoo Messenger is one of the friendliest and best thought out for the Mac. It's light, has most of the features you'd want in a basic messenger, and looks hella better for the Mac than for XP.

Sure, photo sharing would be nice. But do you really need that stuff?

All-in-all, it's a nicely done little app.

If you want to have them keep developing for the Mac, I suggest you go to the feedback feature in the Help menu, and tell them thanks. And if you just switched to Mac, let 'em knowâ??they need to know it's a growing platform, and worth continued development.

"This version no longer working with MSN"

February 02, 2008  |  By simonm1

 |  Version: Yahoo! Messenger 3.0b2.78326

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I've used Yahoo Messenger for over a year as an alternative to MSN with the benefit that I could still add and chat to MSN contacts (albeit without video and file-transfer capabilities).
Unfortunately though, even MSN chat capabilities have been broken for over a month and there is still no update from Yahoo. This slow pace of development (it's been beta for how long now...a year at least???) makes me feel like surrendering and getting an MSN passport again :(...but what alternative is there if you want to chat to MSN contacts??? The sad thing is, if Microsoft buys Yahoo, Yahoo chat will be the first to go!
