You can check your yahoo mail. It will keep you updated throughout the day.
Cons
Correction: This app will keep you updated with your yahoo mail until the evening when your battery runs dry because this app can't stop sucking down the juice. It literally doubles the speed at which my battery drains.

It doesn't keep you logged in. Everytime you exit from the mail you need to re-login. This is pretty irritating.
