"excellent and very useful utility"

October 26, 2010  |  By plaintiger

 |  Version: Not Found

Pros

does some things Cocktail can't

Cons

none (now that the Snow Leopard version's been released)

Summary

Cocktail and Xupport complement each other nicely. i think Cocktail does a thing or two that Xupport doesn't, and Xupport lets you change the colors of the background and "open" indicators in your Dock, which is a great thing, especially considering how difficult the "open" indicators can be to see in the default color scheme.

"Does not install"

June 29, 2009  |  By Sun1Wolf

 |  Version: Xupport 3.5.0

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I have bought Xupport in 2007 and was quite happy with it, until version 3.4.3; then the installer seemed to work well, however it failed to install the software; there simply was no file called Xupport anywhere on my harddisk. The very same happened with 3.5.

I informed the developer in May 2008, however never received a reply, despite my reminding him at least once. So off the remaining files go from my harddisk. There are enough similar programs around that work.

"The Best of the Lot"

January 13, 2009  |  By VersionTrackerUserOpinion

 |  Version: Xupport 3.5.0

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I have tried, and purchased, so many of these maintenance/optimization apps. Some of them are fairly good. Some of them are a mixed bag. Some are free. Some are ridiculously, unnecessarily complicated. And some are actually a bit dangerous, and tend to create problems, that are a pain to fix. But Xupport is safe, fast, thorough and elegant.

I've been using Xupport for the past few years now, and I can not even say one bad word about it. A good example of just how good, powerful, and simple to use, a quality OS X utility app can (and should) be. This is by far the best of the lot. Kudos. *****

"Grrr. Yet more!"

November 17, 2007  |  By grh-svo

 |  Version: Xupport 3.4

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Using this app has made all of the .DS_Store files visible on my system.

Despite FileBuddy telling me "In Mac OS X, items whose names start with "." are invisible. There is no way to make these items visible without renaming them. " THere they are, visible and annoying. Control-Click does not give me the option of making them invisible again. It thinks they are already invisible and offers me to make them visible!

File Buddy also refuses to trash them. I can manually drag one to the trash but it is immediately replaced.

A restart makes no difference.

Apple's Disk Utility repair is no help, nor is rebuilding permissions on the System partition.

In theory, Xupport does make it possible for me to hide them again but making sure the command "Show hidden files and folders" is is unchecked makes no difference! And this mongrel app AGAIN asks me where is Terminal. Grrr!

Plonk and goodbye.

"Very dangerous crap!!!"

June 28, 2006  |  By micmac_dotcom

 |  Version: Xupport 3.2.2

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I just downloaded the latest version (universal) to test it on my mbp 17. And when I clicked the tab "Optimize" or something like that (you'll understand that I don't want to verify!) It COMPLETELY FROZE my mac!
No possibility to kill that app. My mac was not even pingable from outside!

This is a NO NO! No way you freeze like that OSX! If you're not a POS...

Happily There was nothing to save anywhere. I lost only my time.
But this is to AVOID! Never seen that on OSX (and I've seen bad apps!)

"Musical Icons"

January 28, 2006  |  By Kugo

 |  Version: Xupport 3.1.8

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
If only the author would respond to bug tickets as fast as he changes icons. But honestly, this thing has gone from so-so to butt-ugly and back again so many times I just don't have the patience for it anymore.

Use the command line and make your own scripts is what I say. Unix has a far better track record.

"AppleScript Error"

December 19, 2004  |  By psr--2008

 |  Version: Xupport 2.3

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Xupport is an excellent utility, except for something that should be simple. Xupport was fine at repairing permissions in versions 2.2.1 and earlier. Versions 2.2.2, 2.2.3 and 2.3.0 always have the following AppleScript error:

The variable PermissionVolume is not defined. (-2753)

Xupport does not allow me to select anything. I just get an empty bar.

"\"Disks\" tab no longer crashes!"

February 22, 2004  |  By John Sawyer

 |  Version: Xupport 2.0b11

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Hooray! For the first time since I can remember while using Xupport, selecting "Settings: Disk" no longer crashes Xupport. At least not on my Mac, a B&W G3.

My last copy, version 2.0b9, wouldn't run today because it said it was expired. Hence I downloaded version 2.0b11. Don't know that I agree totally with the philosophy of forcing the user to upgrade to the latest bugfixed version by making the previous versions expire. Xupport even has an Update button that appears when you first launch it, but if enough time has elapsed since the last time you downloaded a new version, presumably your older version will no longer launch because it's expired, hence you won't even get the chance to click the Update button the next time there's an update. That's what we call a Catch-22.

Anyway, that's a minor complaint. I like most of the OS X maintenance/hidden options utils, but I particularly like Xupport for the number of things it does. Highly recommended.
