Publisher's Description
From Clarion:
Usenet newsreader for Windows 9x/NT/2000/XP. It's written in Delphi. by the way.
- New users are often confused or annoyed by Xnews opening an article or thread when they click on the subject. The solution is simple: don't click on the subject! Instead, click in any of the other columns, like From or Date or Lines.
- To decode yEnc files, make sure you're using the latest Xnews version. yEnc files should decode transparently (you don't need to do anything special).
- To install/update Xnews, just unzip all files into a directory of your choice. It's safe to overwrite everything. All your data/settings will remain intact.
- Look at Special | Keyboard mapping. You may find commands you did not know of!
- Use the queue, Luke! To decode several binaries, you have to first queue them by pressing space or click on the Q column. Then, hit F4 (decode).
What's new in this version:
- Possibly fixed the errant got reply sound problem.
- If you have a free floating (non-MDI) editor window, it doesn't warn when you shut down Xnews without saving.
- X-Face is now integrated into the exe. No need for compface.dll. Thank you, Matthijs.
- Took out the yEnc info banner. I think everyone knows what it is by now
- Also, added total= to yEnc header, in compliance with yEnc 1.3.

"Unwieldy UI and very slow decoding / binary retrieval."
Version: Xnews 5.04.25
Pros
Lightweight
FreeCons
Could only download at ~1/3 of my connection speed. Tried my regular reader, 100%, Xnews, almost 30%, consistently.
Multiple clicks or menus must be accessed to accomplish simple tasks that should be a single or double click.Summary
Probably a great reader for simple Text, but not in the least for binaries.
Far more effort than should be required to queue multiple files for download, only to have them download at a very slow pace. -
"Best newsreader"
Version: Xnews 5.04.25
Pros
Handles filters admirably and performs with nary a hiccup. Old DOS screen a plus in my mind...
Cons
Can`t think of any. Some might have trouble with it if they are not used to setting up programs as it requires input from the user.
Summary
I tried (and paid for) some other newsreaders and found they all had some issues that Xnews cuts through. It is no longer maintained by the developer but is still the best reader around.

"Very flexible, fast, but it has a long learning curve."
Version: Xnews 5.04.25
Pros
It gives the user a great deal of control. There are multiple settings, yet you can use it pretty quickly without too much set up. As you get to know it, you can learn how to make it work for you.
Cons
It is written by the designer for his own use, and released on that basis. You pretty well have to be a nerd like me to like it.
Summary
Lots of user control if you are willing to learn how to use it.

"Great for those not afraid of the keyboard or menus."
Version: Xnews 5.04.25
Pros
Easy to queue, easy to filter, posts are listed in a sane manner, a post that is 1300 parts wont show up as a single line onscreen but rather all the posts that make up the whole. No need to fool with expanding trees to see the parts.
Cons
No way to save your queue, you loose your queue if you accidentally close the window. No ssl support built in but xnews works well with stunnel even on vista, so who cares. Score system is too complex based on old unix expressions.
Summary
If you are part of the point and click generation don't bother you are too young to figure how to use this program well. Some people would call this client ancient but everytime I try to use something newer I find it impossible to organize and filter things out in a time efficient manner. This program is an excellent for that. Xnews never misses a part so you still get unfinished parts so those pars work that much better. Easy to queue files and filter headers. Posts are listed in a way that lets you see if parts of it are damaged and keeps you from missing large posts even if you scroll fast. You can easily discard and mark read the headers you don't want so you don't need to even see them.
