"Teh sexyness"

December 04, 2004  |  By r-0X#Zapchud

 |  Version: Xirc 0.9.6

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
0.9.6 represents a very solid upgrade to the promising client Xirc always have been. Particularly the actions system is excellent. Although this isn't the most simple-to-use client in the wilds, it is still the most comfortable client to use. It's fast, doesn't suck CPU, is very customizable, solid feature set and channel/query navigation/controls are outstanding. The icing of the cake must be support for Growl in combination with the very customizable actions system. Also, 0.9.6 gives it a healthy facelift.

"There are better alternatives"

July 01, 2004  |  By Maximilian Schulz

 |  Version: Xirc 0.9.3

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I'm following the development of this application for quite some time. Many of the old bugs are removed. and it becomes more stable with each release. But still it is crashing a lot (at least for me). There are quite a lot of features implemented. But the interface sucks. i don't know what other users think about it. but i had the impression, that i never knew where i really was ;)
So if this app should become a killer app, please provide a intuitive user interface. the current one... sorry... sucks.
until then... i can recommend Colloquy. But try the current development version of 2.0. and there you should try the nightly builds and not the one posted on the website ;) and by the way.. it's free.

"Lovely But..."

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Cannot seem to find a way to put info into favorites, nor is there available help. Colored text contents of Quit, Away, and Leave in preferences ('Preferenze') revert to black and white text only. A cautionary note - be careful loading up the provided scripts. I found myself connecting to a handful of servers and channels, and being kickbanned quite abruptly, when I thought I was loading a script to edit. I'm not wild about the arrangement of the console window above channel, and found it obtrusive enough that it got hidden quickly.

The upsides far out-weigh the downsides here as the potential becomes real. With the addition of much-needed help/documentation, and a more obvious way to store favorites, this outstrips the competition in terms of Mac-ness.

"Better!"

 |  Version: Xirc 0.8

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I still can't get highlighting to work, and neither do the dock icon bounce when I get a private message.
A friendly GUI for defining highlights, a dock icon that both bounces, and changes to showing that new private messages has arrived (Much like X-Chat Aqua), or even that someone has triggered your highlights would be a killer.
Support for coloring updated channels is good.
I can actually buy and use this software if I get the requested features :-)
It is in this one IRC-client I see some real potential. Snak, IRCle, and X-Chat all suck IMO.

Summary

This client could end up being OSX's best, but it's not really usable in its present state - i was unable to select a user in the userlist, and the chat output view gets key focus when it's clicked on. freakin' annoying.
