The original review sounds a bit harsher than it should have been. The dock, for instance, only appears on demand.
And the default widgets may seem a little limited, but there are plenty of new and innovative widgets on the Xwidget site and on DeviantART.
I have tried Yahoo Widgets (now retired) and Microsoft's Desktop gadgets, and this application appears to use about 10% of the system resources of Microsoft's offering. -

Limited number of widgets because many widgets have a very distinctive design style and don't go well together visually.Summary
The widget engine seems robust and just works. I've been using it for the past month or so.
My biggest criticism is that most widgets lack flexibility and configurability (if one doesn't want to fire up the widget editor and start coding).
E.g. I didn't find any RSS widget that presented the feeds the way I wanted, most only show the title, others have a very unique design that don't match my desktop theme at all. -

Pros
This is by far the best widget software out there. I have tried every other widget software there is and this has to be the best one yet. Plenty of widgets to choose and download and if you can't find one your looking for, just create your own, simple and easy.

A zoom feature would be nice to have in the editor/creator, It's kinda hard to see what your doing sometimes
