2 stars
Version: Wubi 7.04 beta
"Failed to install"
Pros: Title says it all -- the installation failed. It's a fabulous idea -- installing Linux on a virtual drive, so you don't have to partition. I'll try again when it comes out of Beta. There are two reasons why I gave it 2 stars instead of one: 1) it unistalled completely and cleanly, from the program directory in Windows; and 2) it gave me the most amusing failure notice I've seen in years: "Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!" That has SO much more "pop" than "Fatal system error" and the Blue Screen of Death.

The version provided by download.com is an old one. Get the latest version from wubi-installer.org, it's much smoother. Not sure how to make download.com update their link.

I can't revise the original post, so I'll add this here. I got the installer to work -- by lowering the default size of the virtual files (from 10/10/1 gb to 4/4/1 gb). I have no idea why this worked -- there's plenty of space on my hard drive. I have a 3-year-old HP pc (a320n, XP, 512k RAM).
I now have Ubuntu Linux operating on my computer, which makes me very happy -- I'm writing this from the Mozilla browser in Ubuntu. It has full access to the main hard drive, so I won't have to store doc's or pic's on the virtual drive. I've got what I need to try out this particular flavor of Linux, and that's all I need or want at this time.
If I could, I would change the rating of the Wubi installer from 2 stars to 4. It would get 5 if it had installed at the default settings.

Running Windows XP Professional just became my fav until I buy the new MacBook Pro next month.

Hello
So, is it that perhaps I can take it for granted that you did not find the above application useful? This is good to hear as I was thinking of installing it onto my system; I thought it could be a good way to achieve knowledge of a linux OS without ******* up any other OS currently installed, seems not. Would you like to tell me more of your experience.
Thunderbird5.
