The Worms franchise is known for witty quips, fantastic environments, and well-balanced multiplayer gameplay. The latest addition, Worms Forts, adds the concept of fortifications to the turn-based battles. The game looks fantastic and is as funny as ever, but the demo might cause more frustration than it's worth.
Each of your worms has 60 seconds to make his move, then the other team follows, one worm at a time. Build fortifications first, because firing a weapon ends your turn. Right-clicking brings up a menu of weapons and structures. Cool weapons like the flying bishop with exploding bibles and the Trojan Donkey are available from specific buildings, but the lack of documentation means you'll have to figure them out yourself.
Lack of help files or tutorials is just one of the issues. Starting the game brought up a black screen that we could only bypass using Ctrl-Alt-Delete, then hitting Cancel. After that, the game runs fairly smoothly. Single-player games last only 8 minutes, though, and multiplayer games 10 minutes. When the game ends, the application abruptly quits, then shows a mandatory 20-30 second ad. While series fans may enjoy the fortification system, the Worms Forts: Under Siege demo is very rough.
Publisher's description
From Acclaim Entertainment :Worms Forts: Under Siege puts you in command of a team of up to four fort-dwelling worms. In the game, you can direct your worm garrison to construct defenses, expand your castle to seize valuable resources, and build weapons of mass destruction to destroy your opponents. Test yourself against the single-player game by battling through the 20 missions, or take on three of your friends in Fort vs. Fort mode. This demo features one single-player and one multiplayer map.
